How to measure daily steps when doing cardio?

When I do cardio, I do a mixed cardio using the cardio workout type. I start with a treadmill for half an hour, high intensity and incline (so I grab the treadmil itself to keep myself stable at high pace) and then half an hour stair stepper, again high intensity so I grab the handles to keep my stability.

I just recognized that my steps are not counted into my daily step goal during these activities. I'll now check if it is counting while I'm doing a strentgh workout, but it's a bit frustrating that I go to a gym with 4k steps, because I worked all day, and then I leave with 4k so I have to go for a walk if I want to fulfil it. I mean it at least pushes me but you know what I mean.

What do you guys recommend keep daily steps UNattached from my workouts?

  • I recommend not caring about steps at all. They are a proxy for activity and a lousy one at that. There are far too many activities which do not involve steps, so using them as a goal seems, in my mind, to be a bit pointless. This was particularly evident to me as a cyclist. Lots of activity, lots of calories burned, lots of fitness. No steps. I do not care about them. Problem solved.

  • You're right, but I do care about how much I step a day. Workouts are one thing, but walking enough is important for me. But, as a solution, I tried to walk on the treadmil with free hands and by doing that it did count correctly! Have to get used to it though.

  • You could always wear your watch on your ankle - works surprisingly well in cases where your arms are not performing a "normal" walking motion.  Especially good overall with a chest strap. Of course, you would not have easy access to the watch display...
