You can try exchanging the suspension on the car You can also start an activity preventing the step counter while driving. Apart from diverse motosport activity types, also cycling, rowing, swimming, and some other activities prevent the steps counting. At the end you can discard the activity. Or you can keep it, and change the activity type to Driving in Garmin Connect, and have so a nice log of your car driving. In such case, depending whether you prefer saving the battery, or having the map included in the activity, select an outdoor, or an indoor activity (i.e. Indoor cycling) type for recording the drives.
I get the same thing when driving my fork lift at work.
I did over 10,000 steps decorating my kitchen a few weeks back
It doesn't count steps. It counts impacts. There's a 3-D accelerometer which reports movement and speed in any direction. Then there's some computation to classify it as a step or something else. Your body bouncing up and down due to foot steps is hard to distinguish from bouncing up and down while riding over bumps.
