Epix Pro software buggy everywhere: HR zones / weather data on watch face / garmin pay?

I have a new Epix pro for two weeks now and I a lot of problems with the software!

The weather data on the preset watch face shows values that are way off from the weather widget when you open it.

Funny that the problem exists and Garmin is doing NOTHING FOR TWO YEARS!!! There's a thread in the forum about his.

What a bad customer service!

But there are more things not really working for me which are even more severe:

The software seems buggy and in beta status everywhere ( actual version 15.77 ). I also had the following issues:

- first after unpacking the maps did not work at all! I first had to find out that I have to install garmin express on my PC and then reinstall all the map data.

Until this worked it was half a day of work! Just felt like pain in the ass and at that moment I was shortly before sending the watch back and get a refund! I'm sorry that I did not!!!

- garmin pay did not work the first time i wanted to use it today, had to remove and reinstall the credit card, hope it works now! Will test the next days. Great when you rely on it.

It's not a problem with the credit card. With google pay it worked without any problems!

Worst Thing:

- the heart rate zone settings are way off in garmin connect and during the training on the watch; I have used the MAX HR settings with the percentages from garmin:

For a MAX HR of 185 the watch told me for a recovery run that a heart rate of 148 is perfect, great! That's totally *** and also way off               from the percentage values from garmin!

The same is displayed in garmin connect in the traing review.

I have found a workaround but in the forum it was said that it's not permanent for everywone!

The customer service in germany was also really great. Fact is: no help at all!!!

Those training advices are one of the main reasons for me to buy a watch for nearly 800 €. How can I ever trust the training advices from the software when such a simple

calculation is done wrong by the software.

Finally, after two weeks of using the watch, I feel betrayed and I am not sure if it was the right decision to buy the EPIX PRO (gen2)!

I had to do the work to sent my screenshots to the technical service and they will ( whenever that is) have at look at the HR issue. It's like beeing in the beta program for a totally new product. But usually you don't have to pay the full price for such a ***! Garmin should pay it's users doing the work for them!

If they don't solve those issues fast I could have used my old galaxy watch 4 or even  a 30 $ cheap china gadget watch and would be happier with the price/ delivery-ratio.

Actually the watch is useless! It's like buying the Apple Iphone pro max and you can't use it to make a call and Apple customer service tells you that you need to send in all your data, do the work and then they tell you that they are working (possibly?) on that problem to solve it!

Shame on you, Garmin! Really, shame on you!!!

  • Actually the watch is useless!

Since you feel the watch is not fit for purpose return it and get your money back.

  • I feel betrayed and I am not sure if it was the right decision to buy the EPIX PRO (gen2)!

You should return your watch for a full refund - obviously, the watch is not meeting your expectations.

  • Return is not so easy. After 14 days I can't just send it back and get a refund in Germany. They can say everything is fine and they can try to fix it two times before refund. And a proof of such issues isn't so easy.

I will give support a chance to solve that issues, when they don't solve it in a week I'll have to fight for a return. The problem is that I have to fight this out with the company where I have ordered the watch and not directly with garmin.

Are you an EPIX Pro user and are you happy with it?

No problems at all? Garmin service always great?

Cannot believe it after what I have seen up to now!

  • Hi, i have got the same watch and it works great. Lots of sports included (in contrast to Apple). The watch takes a couple of weeks to learn your performance and then works fantastic. It really is rhe best sports watch I ever had. After 6 months I am still discovering and learning all the amazing functionalities.

Very interesting to read the several contradictions in your posts. That makes me wonder what you are?

  • What I am? An unsatisfied customer!

Which contradictions? Can you name them?

Might be that can explain them to you. I tried to keep the mess short!

  • What are you? A Garmin employee?

  • Anyway, might be that I got a defective watch. Ever thought of that?

I had a Vivoactive 3 before nd there I didn't have such issues. The problem with that was that the barometer broke shortly after 2 years of usage when the warranty expired. Then I have switched to the Galaxy watch 4 in between. I know that Garmin can do good work, this is why I wanted to change back, especially because of the great battery life.

But fact is: my watch is not working as it should and the Garmin service is not doing a great job to solve the problem.

And also fact is that for example the issue with the weather data on the watch face is known for 2 years (search this forum) and nothing happened.

The issue with the HR zones I have found in an external forum with the (non-)permanent solution. And that was for an old fenix 3 or 5 as far as I remember. So, for me it seems that Garmin doesn't even try to solve things in their software.

I will wait for the technical support now and then I will see. But up to now, at least the watch I got is defective!!!

And for the price of the Epix Pro one can at least expect some more help from Garmin service!

In fact, for the herart rate zones the guy on the hotline even told me that I can't expect this to be working! What is so complicated to calculate for example a 60 percent value of a MAX HRof 185? If the technicians at Garmin can't do that in their software, they should quit doing technical development!

    Cheers!

  • Here is another happy Epix Pro Gen 2 user, but I have to admit that I'm using Garmin devices for a very long time (FR305, FR205, Fenix 3HR, Feniix 6X, Edge 530, Edge 1030) and I'm really used to use the devices. My wife has currently her second Garmin device and is happy with it, too.

I'm in Germany, too and I didn't experience a too big difference between weather data of my Epix compared to my iPhone. But my German Connect app is always started on the iPhone and it is alway connected via bluetooth to the Epix device. In fact there is a difference if I compare it to other weather services (at the time of writing) there is a difference of 4° (1° Garmin, 2° Apple/Yahoo, 3° AccuWeather, 5° OpenWeaterMap), but in fact I don't know where the weather stations are exactly located for the different services. I remember some times ago where I figured out that a weather station about 20km away from my home (with a very different altitude) was used to show my local weather data by one of the services. (I don't remember the service anymore.) So the location of the weather station might be an issue and the same applies for the update intervals of the weather information. To maintain a relatively low power consumption, Garmin devices are updating weather information in a bigger interval as far as I know, so it might be once a hour, if your devices is connected to internet via your smart phone or when you enter the weather widget manually.

I'm really curious, would you be willing to explain the "none permanent solution" for you HR you talked about? For me and my devices I may set my heart rate or even power zones in Garmin Connect and they are synced to all of my devices. Until now the values were not modified even when I added new devices. The only point where I experienced automatic changes was when my Watch stated "New max. HR detected, would you like to change the value." and I accepted the change - same for FTP values. Same applies to the percentage values of the zones. So on your Epix you have up to 4 different HR-Zone configurations (Running, cycling, swimming, everything else).

  • The solution was to

    1) reset the HR values in the menu where you setup your HR zones (in Garmin connect, select your watch-> user profile and so on)

    2) change the calculation mode for the HR zones to another method, also do a reset there

    3) change again to your favorite method, reset it again

    4) I have also synced the watch after that and switched it off and on again

The next training after this procedure the values were ok.

What I can't understand is that such a simple update operation is buggy in the software. And this is also the reason why I am not sure about the more complicated metrics the watch and garmin connect shows you about your trainings. Can one trust such a system which does not update such a simple data reliable? And again, this was one of the main reasons to buy the EPIX PRO!

And then garmin support even tells you that software problems aren't in the warranty.

    Example:

I have used the Garmin percentages for the HR zones based on my MAX HR of 185.

For zone 2 the watch says 60 to 69% of Max Hr, when you calculate that it is from 111 to 128 bpm.

The watch told me during training and also later in Garmin connect in the training review that zone 2 is instead of my calculations from 132 to 146 bpm.

And that is way off. And exactly this data I have sent to garmin support and they claim that is OK!

I will try to post some screenshots in the next post.
