ski activity spoken audio notifications

I am trying to figure out what stat the spoken notifications on my phone are reporting on each run for the downhill skiing activity on the Garmin Epix (Gen 2). My Android phone will report with an audio notification the lap # and then the statistic in question from the Garmin Connect app a short time after I get onto a ski lift. However, every time I try to determine the actual statistic being reported, I cannot match it up with anything reasonable. I have even gone into the activity report multiple times on different days to get some sense on what the number may be referring to.  However, it does not line up with anything.

Here are a few more details:

  • Auto Run is turned on for the ski activity.
  • I do not have any custom alerts set up (e.g. high speed, heartrate, etc.)
  • Under the Auto Run option for the ski activity (when navigating to that menu from the watch), the lap alert has max. speed as the primary field and lap distance as the secondary field, but I believe these only affect what is visually shown on the watch when a run is complete. Also, the spoken audio notifications do not line up with these stats when I look at the activities details afterwards.
  • The setting for skiing on the Garmin Connect app do not appear to show any further options to indicate what the spoken audio notifications refer to. You cannot change anything under the "Auto Run" option except turning it on and off.

So does anyone know what the audio notifications refer to? I mean, maybe because I have 3D speed turned on, the speeds I see for the runs afterwards don't line up with the spoken notifications, but that doesn't completely make sense.

  • The Audio Prompts are customizable, so you can check how they are configured (and eventually change them) in your Garmin Connect app » Device Settings » Phone » Audio Prompts

  • Unfortunately that does not really answer my question. While yes I can see some "limited" options to turn on and off various alerts and also to set some custom alerts for pace/speed, heart rate, and power, I do not have any custom alerts turned on (see some attached screenshots of the audio prompt settings from my phone).

My phone through the Garmin connect app will still report the lap # after each run and then also some random statistic which does not line up with any statistic I can find.

  • Tap on the three options at the top - Pace / HR / Power and see whether they are enabled, with which frequency, and with which options. That should give you sufficient insights for understanding what is being announced and when. You can also change the language or dialect to another one, if you have problems understanding the US English announcement. The lap prompts typically announce the lap number, lap average pace, and lap average HR, as far as I remember. The periodic prompts for Pace / HR / Power then may add more announcements.

  • Well unfortunately those three options at the top of the "audio prompts" settings do not give sufficient insights for what is being announced. As I stated before, the settings for the Pace / HR / Power are all disabled on my end (and attaching the screenshots from the settings on my Garmin connect app). And I have additional found the page in the Epix Gen 2 manual which does not describe anything in detail either.

I do hear the lap number announcement, but the following spoken statistics is not the lap average pace or lap average HR as I do not have those turned on nor does the number spoken match up to anything when I look at the lap details afterwards. And obviously, I am not having trouble understanding the US English announcement which I hope should be abundantly clear from my writing of these forum posts.

  • As I stated before, the settings for the Pace / HR / Power are all disabled on my en

OK, sorry, I missed that. In that case the Lap Alert announces the lap number and the lap time. At least so it is with my watch.

  • I’ve been scratching my head too over the last two days skiing but I believe I’ve figured it out.  It’s the time from getting on the lift to the next time you get on the lift — a “lap”  in Garmin’s eyes I guess. It’s not a stat that’s on the default screens but you can add it. Hit the three dots then data screens, you will have to play with it from there. It’s not intuitive.

  • I believe that is correct. It kind of boggles my mind why Garmin chose that "lap" time instead of something more useful like the actual time spent skiing downhill.
