Active Calories from Edge 1040 not syncing?

Recently I have noticed that the overall calories burned reported on my Epix and synced to Garmin Connect are not taking into account active calories burnt on an Activity Recorded on my Garmin Edge 1040.

For example yesterday I did an indoor bike ride and recorded on Edge 1040 (I was also wearing watch but not recording activity on that).    Edge 1040 activity estimated 1563 calories burnt.    However overall active calories in connect is 691.  I am sure this used to sync up correctly!

Looking back over last few weeks, some days it works others not??

  • This has been the case for a few months now. I now dual record on the watch, and discard on the Edge at the end of the ride.

It gets the correct info this way, but it's pretty annoying to have to do it.

  • Is this peculiar to the Edge 1040 as activity calories recorded on my Edge 830 sync perfectly to my passive watch.

  • Not sure, my old Edge 530 is sitting in my bottom draw unloved.

Possible. While new devices like the Edge 1040 use the Unified Training Status for the exchange of data, older devices use the original Physio TrueUp only. For the UTS to work properly, you have to sync both devices, one after the other, before and after each activity. Often you have to wait a minute after the sync, and then sync both devices again.

This is a diagram explaining how it works (from the article What is Unified Training Status? | Garmin Customer Support):

  • I have no issues with syncing my Edge 830, everything syncs to my watch correctly. I was merely asking if this was a problem that had been seen anywhere other than the Edge 1040. But thanks anyway for taking a look.

  • As I wrote, Edge 830 used a different method for syncing the data between device and GC, hence it is well possible that for some it worked all right earlier, while not as smooth as then, now with newer devices.  However, syncing both devices was necessary with the old method too.

  • I am aware of the process, but when I ride my phone and watch are always nearby and connected so the syncing has always been seamless and unconscious for me.

  • Yeah that's why I upgrade at great expense to Epix Pro 2 and Edge 1040 to benefit from Unified Training Status for the exchange of data, because TrueUp on the older devices was very poor.   But as said above, even with multiple syncs of both devices, active calorie transfer from Edge 1040 is intermittent in last couple of weeks.  The UTS is operational because the other metrics are synced.  I have also notice that Garmin Connect iOS app updated recently - made related???

  • From yesterday, recorded ride on Edge 1040 while wearing the Epix also. All metrics synced up by Unified Training Status and same on Epix, Edge and GC.  Images below show the activity is visible on Epix, however the calories burned on the ride (842c) not added onto overall Active Calorie count.  Come to think of it there isn't a total calorie count on the Edge.  So UTS should be doing some adding up in background which is not working??  Looking at HR logged in Epix watch while I was wearing during the activity it was a lot lower, I was not recording the Activity on the Epix.  Has it used this lower HR from Epix for calorie count and ignored the recorded ride on the Edge 1040 with HRM strap?

  • Thanks for the info. Very helpful. I've exactly the above combo. Do I also need to start the activity (bike ride) on my 965 as well as connecting it with my power meter and HR strap or just wear it (passively) during the ride? Thanks
