Epix gen2 - wrong weather data for Oslo-area, Norway in activities.

Epix2/Garmin connect sometimes using wrong weather data for Oslo-area, Norway.

It is for some reason using data from the long time ago decommissioned Oslo city-airport ENFB - which today is the heliport/weather code for an oil rig in the North Sea 500km away from Oslo.

This is only for activities, not morning report which seems correct.

Where did you get this information?

I have retrieved the current weather data from ENFB, and in my databases the coordinates are still those of Oslo.
Even if the airport is no longer in operation, the weather station can still be operated.

It would be very strange if a heliport were to use the ICAO code of a commercial airport.

    EDIT :

I actually found some contradictory data on the internet. There are pages that identify ENFB as an oil platform and also the weather data is different than the data for OSLO city.

My watch also says that ENFB is in the middle of the water:

Since my tactix 7 pro has the latest official aviation database, which is based on data from Jeppesen, I assume that ENFB is indeed the oil platform.

    Crazy

  • I would take screenshots and ask support for an explanation.

I would be interested to know what the support team has answered. Please provide feedback.

  • Well, to cut it short. Temp local yesterday for my cross-country skiing was -16 C. Temp for my cross-country skiing in Garmin Connect was +4 C. Mismatch.

Temp for Statfjord B Oil Rig (ENFB/FBU/Fornebu) was +4 C.

I can personally confirm that local temp was -16 C and not +4 C, I would have noticed by feel.

ENFB shows also as FBU - Fornebu which is a place close to Oslo. I think this is why the database Garmin Connect are using does this mismatch sometimes - just for close to Oslo-areas.

But the weather data from ENFB/FBU/Fornebu is actually the oil rig Statfjord B far far away in the ocean - I assume a nostalgic rename/reposition.

Have not heard from Garmin Support. I do not expect so either.

    @Garmin - Chris

  • ENFB was a commercial airport, decomissioned in 1998. Today 25 years later it is an oil rig far away, should not be a problem, but Garmin misunderstand the location name from its database naming.

Only in activities. Morning report no problem for some reason, probably morning report is not using the same weather database. Only Garmin knows why.

And did hit the wrong button "Report as abusive" in stead of "edit", this is of course not abusive :)

  • I am sorry you have the issue. If you haven't already, it looks like you may have, please reach out to Outdoor Product Support in your region.

  • Thanks for answer.

Info on Garmin.com that Garmin Connect primarily are using the nearest airport for weather data during activities.

I assume the cause is probably the database GC are using for airport-weather, which confuses the database or Garmin with the name and position for Fornebu (which in addition to the oil-rig also is a place close to Oslo). Not sure of which database, but it could look like the National Weather Service in the USA. And their ENFB weather is definitely not actual Oslo-weather.

    ENFB:

Most users probably does not care, I have not for years until I randomly spotted it in GC the other day. The weather-app on the Epix2 and morning report shows correct weather, it is just Garmin Connect and the weather logged during activities/running etc.

No big deal, but somewhat annoying for a xxxx-dollar product.
