Treadmill calibration on 15.xx

I had previously calibrated the Epix Pro for treadmill running (it was off by only about 30 metres for every km). Today was my first treadmill run (same treadmill) since the 15.xx firmware, and the Epix Pro readings were flying off the scale, recording more than 5 km for a 2 km lap. The calibration option did not appear before saving the activity, and Garmin gave me hallucinatory new personal best records. How is treadmill calibration supposed to work now?

  • Did you restart the watch after the update?  If not, do that.  Many times new "oddities" after a firmware update are solved by restarting the watch.

  • Thank you. Yes, I did.

I have restarted the watch again twice since my last treadmill run. Today I tried out the same treadmill again. I ran 500m, and the watch reported 1.48km, and again, there was no option for calibration.

In the meantime, the readings for outdoor running are normal.

Is it possible that some sensor blew during firmware update? Is there any self-diagnostic software on the watch?

I should add that I use both the Running Dynamics Pod and Foot Pod while on the treadmill as well.

  • If the food pod is Stryd or similar, check your foot pod Ant+ settings under Sensors & Accessories and see when distance is used from it. Also check the calibration coefficient.

In your activity settings make sure that you have added Stryd-zones field or similar for the food-pad on one your displays.

In activity settings you might also check that Running power is Smart or Accessory Mode, if you want it from your Food-pod.

No, it didn’t blew some sensor. Outdoor it will get distance from GPS (normally), while on threadmill, it will use pedometer or external accessory like a food-pod.

  • Call garmin support.  They will help you out with this.  Their customer service is the best I've ever experienced.

  • Many thanks to all for your kind advice. I think I have traced the problem to my Garmin Foot Pod. I turned off GPS and did a walk. After about 300m, Garmin announced that I had completed 1km. The settings look normal to me:

    Speed: Indoor

    Distance: Indoor

    Cal.Factor: 98.4

I bought this pod in 2015 with the Fenix 3, so I guess I should not be surprised that its lifespan has expired.

I see that Garmin has stopped selling the foot pod. So my follow-up question would be: is a foot pod still necessary these days with a modern watch like the Epix pro? My main use case is keeping track of the distance on the treadmill, and I don't swing my hands much during runs. If still useful, what would be a good replacement? I see Stryd mentioned, but from their website, it may be an overkill for my needs.

Many thanks, and happy new year to all.

  • Normal and normal. Maybe, but doesn't match your observation, where the calibration coefficient should be:

    (300 × (98.4/100)) / 1000 = 0.2952 × 100 = 29.52

Try that, or try without pod at all. The watch has built-in pedometer functionality. This built-in pedometer will normally calibrate when running with GPS I believe and on treadmill after 1.5 km/1 mile (according to the watch) it is also possible to finish with calibration where you enter the distance from the treadmill.

I didn't even know Garmin had made a foot pod and the latest documentation I could find, was from 2008.
