Is it possible to just save an activity? Just Save, with no resume options, or confirmations and edits?

I am new to the Epix and I find saving activities to be really cumbersome, compared to how it works on something like the Venu line.

For instance, I select Strength, drop on the floor and do a set of push-ups. To save it, the watch makes me jump through hoops to save it. I press the top right button to stop, it starts counting an Edit screen, on the second press it resumes the activity, on the third press it asks if it should stop the activity, after another press I have to peck on the Save button, because the default is Resume.

I personally find this to be a poor UI and too complicated, and I wonder if I am doing something wrong, or if it can be changed by the user.

Thanks.

  • No. And to be honest I'm quite happy with the UI as it is. I stop an activity and have several options with the most relevant in the first three places: Resume, Save, Resume Later. That's my preference. I'd rather accidentally resume a stopped activity than accidentally save an activity I did not want to end.

Is it really that hard: Stop with top right, Select Save with bottom left, Save with top right. Three button presses.

  • I don’t get what’s the issue you’re stating. When you have an activity running and you want to save it, you press the stop button and then press save on a screen.

I think this is designed as it is to prevent accidentally saving (thus stopping) an activity which is super bad thing to happen IMHO as it destroys data. Pls keep in mind that the watch is mainly for endurance and similar activities and strength is just an nice addon.

  • Hm, in many instances it doesn't work so simply. Let me try and spell out what my experience is:

    1. Press Start to select an activity
    2. Select Strength
    3. Select Free
    4. Do pushups or pullups
    5. As soon as you stop (and sometimes if you pause even briefly), the adjust weight countdown screen comes on.
    6. If I press Stop at that point, the watch reverts back to the activity and continues tracking it
    7. I have to press Stop again
    8. Then I have to press Stop yet again to confirm that I want to stop the activity
    9. Then it goes to a screen where Resume is selected by default
    10. I have to either press Down to select Save, after which I have to press Stop again, or touch the tiny Save on the screen.

To me, unless I am doing it all wrong, this is really poor UI and really cumbersome. Forget about comparing it to Apple, but even comparing it to the Venu 2 Plus, where at least this part is, in my experience, far better thought out.

I was hoping that there would be a way to disable stuff like Weight Edit and choose Save as default instead of Resume, which would cut down on the rather ridiculous number of clicks.

  • I don't use the strength activity, but it does have an Edit Weight toggle you can disable.

(I can't write quite recreate your steps, but that might be because I am just lying down doing nothing. )

  • Thank you! Getting rid of the Edit Weight helps (I missed it Disappointed

Now if there is a way to set Save as default instead of Resume, it'd be almost there.

  • good.

I think you are supposed to use the lap key to change to next set/exercise and not press stop till you have finished your training.

If save was default, it would be too easy to finish the activity by mistake. Other brands have similar measures to prevent that.

  • Unfortunately, it doesn't work well for me. I do exercises throughout the day, not training. I get off a call, drop and do 40 pushups, get on my next call. Next free 5 minutes may be squats, or whatever. A toggle for default between Save and Resume would go a long way to streamlining the process. I get the idea, but the UI does feel a little clunky and old-fashioned to me.

    Anyway, your help is appreciated.

  • i think your post title is misleading if all you need is change the behavior of a single activity (Strength training). Pls understand that you most probably never get a single button save because of the accidental button press there needs to be an extra confirmation.

I can imagine two ways you could use to simplify the workflow:

    1. Hit the stop button when done with the exercise, and let it be like that. The watch will auto-save the activity after 30 minutes. Hence when you start with another set you either just press the GPS button to Resume (if less than 30 minutes elapsed), or restart another Strength activity.

    2. Use the Cardio activity profile instead of Strength (you can change it later to Strength in Garmin Connect if you really want to have it so). The advantage if Cardio is, that in its settings you can enable the auto-pause. Hence you just start the activity at the beginning of the day, and let it auto-detect when you actually exercise. There might be some false detections if you move too much during the calls, but you can still pause it manually whenever you want.
  • Short press to pause, long press to save would be a nice feature.
