15.74 - Disable automatic nap detection ?

Hi,

just got the latest 15.74 final yesterday and I already got a fake nap registered while I was reading. I understand there is almost no difference from the watch perspective between me quietly reading in my sofa and me having a nap so I don't expect any improvement from an automatic detection perspective.

As a grown-up I know when I want to have a nap and the manual system with the timer is perfectly implemented, could you consider a way to disable automatic nap detection and just use the manual nap feature ?

Thanks and keep the good job in adding features!

  • Same for sleep mode, have a on off mode vs preset schedule

Did you try setting the Sleep & Wake Up times a minute apart, and then starting / stopping the Sleep Mode manually through the Controls menu or through a hot key?

  • did that before when I had epix,(not on epix pro)  didnt work good and it actually mess up sleep detection ( not recording, skip days)

Did really the old Epix already have the manually controllable Sleep Mode? I may be wrong, but I thought it was introduced only with the latest generation of watches. Of course, if you disable the Bed & Wake Up times by setting them close together (and out of the normal sleep times!!!), and you do not set the Sleep Mode manually, then it is less probable your sleep gets detected correctly.

Otherwise, for preventing the naps detection, you can start any activity, then pause it and hit the option Resume Later - that should prevent the sleep / nap detection too. Should the Resume Later not work for the naps, then you can let the watch running in the activity mode during the rest (using for example Relaxation, Yoga, or Cardio). That should definitely prevent marking an ordinary rest as a nap. You can discard the activity at the end - no need to keep it.

  • I meant to say I am now on epix pro. what you are proposing just too much  after spending $2k+ ( epix gen 2 full price + epix pro 51mm ) when it should be much easier and without any tinkering or work around

  • also I forgot to say, when u do resume later on an activity, it burns thru battery in background process.

Yes, you are right, but I am afraid you have currently no other option. If you want that Garmin changes it, try requesting it at Share Ideas | Garmin and hope there are numerous other similar requests in order to give it some chance to be considered for the next 2024/Q1 firmware release, if you are really, really lucky. It can also take years. So it may be better learning to use the available workarounds now.

No, the watch does not burn any extra energy when in the "Pause / Resume Later" mode. It is exactly in the same power consumption mode as when used in the plain smartwatch mode. That's the difference to the plain Pause, which powers down from the activity to the smartwatch power level only after 5 minutes (when the Power Save Timeout is set to the default 'Normal' option), resp. 25 min (when the option 'Extended' is used). So basically if your rest does not surpass 30 minutes, you could even use the plain Pause, since the 5 minutes of Activity mode will not make any  noticeable difference in the consumption. However, the plain Pause autosaves after 30 minutes, so it is not useable for longer rests. The 'Resume Later' avoids both of it - it powers down to the smartwatch power level instantly, and there is no time limit for it.

Anyway, the difference between the consumption of the watch in an indoor activity mode, and in smartwatch mode is rather negligible (in contrary to outdoor activities using GPS), so if you rest just an hour or so during the day, then I would not bother with the pause / resume later at all - you will not see any big difference in battery consumption, and it is quicker and more comfortable just starting an activity when you go to rest, and then stopping it, when it is over.

  • Or At least being able to delete the "naps" that were not aka reading a book or warching a movie.

  • Update March 22, 2024:

Our engineers have indicated there have been improvements made to the nap detection included with the Q1 Public Update software version 16.22 now available. So if you have not already, I would recommend updating this using Garmin Express.

  • Yes please! I want to turn off nap auto detect. If I’m going to take a nap, I’ll set the timer manually and take my nap. I get false naps almost every day. So annoying!

  • Not sure if it's a coincidence or if it was a too long "nap" but this was not registered as a nap.

Didn't have any issues before and not that i really care but looks a bit strange. Will see how it goes next time.
