My max heart rate is around 175. If I set it to that number manually, and I perform an activity where I never reach a HR above 165, Garmin will still update the max HR to something around 186.
Is this supposed to happen?

The Max Hr is not the same as the highest heart rate you done in an activity. It is the highest heart…
I guess its this..I've noticed occasionally I get a higher new max HR than the HR I hit during an activity too >>
"Auto Detection can calculate your maximum heart rate value using performance data recorded by the watch during an activity. This value may differ from an observed lower value recorded by your watch as the feature can determine a different value based on a proprietary algorithm."
Interesting. Then it's a very bad algorithm, as the highest ever recorded heart rate - even at highest efforts - is a lot lower than that.
Indeed a very strange choice. I have noticed the same, however the auto calculated max HR was due to erroneous readings from my EPIX Pro, when it was recording a 189BPM while I was stretching and feeling really calm. I've set my max hr to a lower value since I couldn't complete a guided LT test, where I was supposed to run for 3' at 175+ BPM, when my max observed HR is around 170-172 BPM.

The Max Hr is not the same as the highest heart rate you done in an activity. It is the highest heart rate your heart is able to beat.
When you exercise the Watch analyze your heart rate and it can determine your theoretical threshold and max pulse heart rate if you keep your pulse above a certain level for some time.
There have been som none scientific tests by people (YouTube) on how accurate these values are and the conclusion was that they are quite close to what you get if you do a proper threshold or max heart rate test.

I’ve had the same issue. I’m 53, my max prior to updating to 15.74 & 15.76 was 175. Now, same as you it fires up to 186 every time! I change it back but it does something different after every workout. I don’t use Sports Heart Rates but after my last run it set them to 186 default, 186 run, 174 cycling & 170 swim. I’ve removed them countless times but they keep getting added. Latest behaviour is yesterday did an indoor bike and it set that heart rate back to 186 but didn’t add the sports heart rate. When I change my heart rate back it ticks everyday as a preferred long workout day and sets every suggested workout to a rest day. Theres a thread on Reddit about it. Garmin are aware.
