Epix Gen 2 cannot connect to PC

I've got a brand new Epix - love it so far!

It's currently slowly downloading map updates and it's taking a while.  I tried to connect it to Garmin Express on my desktop PC using the new cable provided.  So far, I cannot add it to my account.

I get the Windows "bings" when I connect it, but Express cannot find it.

Using the same cable, USB port and software can connect to my old Fenix 5 plus.  And the PC is connecting my Edge 530, no problem.

I usually plug them in every now and then for map updates etc.

So for the Epix, is there anything I can try? Or is there any need to connect to to the PC any more? Maybe I just give up and live with updating over WiFi, albeit a bit slower.

  • I'm not sure about the Epix specifically, but on other garmin watches there's a setting. I believe it's called "USB mode". It should be set to "MTP".

  • If you hear the connection sound, wait around 1 - 2 min., my experience: it takes some time ...

  • Agreed. The whole process takes me about 40 seconds. It takes some time for the watch to automatically change USB modes from Garmin mode to MTP (3 sets of Windows beeps) then get the green dot on Garmin Express.  Or to see your new Epix to add it.

, if still an issue, I would uninstall Garmin Express and check the option "Delete all Garmin Express files from your computer." Then download the latest version (v7.19.0.0) from Garmin Express - Windows | Garmin You'll also need to add your edge 530 and Fenix 5.

  • Thanks all!

I tried all sorts, including leaving it plugged in for several minutes and trying periodically to see if it showed up in Explorer or was accessible from Garmin Express. Nothing worked.

I even tried holding the button when connecting to force MTP mode.

I was playing with the system settings on the watch and downloaded a couple of updates directly on the watch.

After coming back to this thread I tried to connect the watch again. I plugged it in and it almost immediately showed up as Epix and I was able to add it to Express.

Perhaps the system updates on the watch changed something. It's working now anyway!
