Epix Pro Gen 2 - Losing course activities

Hello,

I just purchased my Epix Pro Gen2 a few weeks ago. A couple of times when I am following a course I look at my watch and the course has disappeared and there is no way to resume it. I can start the course back up but I lose the activity and can't save it so I end up with a partial activity saved.

I am wondering if my watch is going into power save and that is what loses the course activity.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Thanks.

  • Do not use the Course Navigation activity. Use Walking, Hiking, Running, Biking activity or whatever else you need the navigation for, and start the course navigation from within the menu of the concerned activity profile. Should the shutdowns continue, you can restart the navigation anytime without saving the activity.

  • Thanks for the suggestion.

I just tested it and found that if I start a walking activity and then go into the activity menu choose navigation, courses, and then 'do the course' it starts a course navigation activity and pauses the walking activity. However, I can choose courses and just show the map with the track without pausing the walking activity.

  • Which version are you on? I'm on software version 14.68. In my case, starting a walking activity then "do course" does not pause a walking activity or change the activity recording in any way.

  • Thanks for the help.

    I am on v14.68

    This is what I'm doing:

I click on button 5 (top-right) and start the walking activity by pressing button 5 again.

Then I press-hold button 3 (left middle) and go to Navigation->Courses->Select Course->Do Course.

Then I walk around the block and either save or discard the course.

I then see the walk activity and it hasn't recorded anything, it is paused at 0.00. I'd have to start it fresh.

I'm going on a hike in the morning so I'll try it again and If I lose the course again I'm hoping the hiking activity is still running so I can bring the course back up with out losing the activity.

  • I then see the walk activity and it hasn't recorded anything, it is paused at 0.00.

I'm guessing you didn't actually start recording the activity. You have press start one more time so that you see the big green arrow.

  • Thanks for all your help.

I went on a hike today and started a hiking activity and made sure it started running. Then I went to navigation and did 'do course.' The course was the only activity visible but I was confident the hiking activity was also running. I could view my course as I hiked.

At the end of the hike, I saved the course and had two activities in Garmin Connect. 1) My Course Activity, 2) Hiking Activity.

This tells me you are both correct, If I lose the course the Hiking activity is still running.

I also set the power to the option 'Max Accuracy 30 hours'  because I saw that it would let the map run. With my course map up I never went into power save and I never lost my course.

  • Did you really start the navigation from the Hiking activity menu as I suggested in my initial post? I mean after starting the Hike activity (or even before you really start it), when the Hiking activity is already selected, long-press the Menu button, scroll to Navigation » Courses » your course » Do Course. Then you can start the hike (if not already started).

I definitely do no get two activities when navigating with any activity like Running, Hiking, Cycling, or Walk. I do not have an Epix 2 though, but afaik it works in the same way across all Garmin's models.

  • I didn't start it exactly like that. I'll have to try that next time.

I started the hiking activity and started recording. Then I long-pressed the menu button and went to navigation...Do course. That's probably why I got two activities at the end.

I see in the hiking menu before I press 'start' the menu button has 3 dots and I can short-press it and go to Navigate->Courses->then get a list of my courses. I can then select the course and choose 'do course.' Is that what you mean?

    Thanks for all the help.

  • Both ways work for me, and I never end with two activities. However, as I wrote, I do not use Epix 2, so it will be better if another Epix 2 user comments.
