Epix pro sleep tracking buggy

I still not happy with epix pro 51 mm. Previously i had old samsing watch 46 mm the first one. Its tracking sleeping , naps everytime i sleep. In detail view i can see my sleep periods accordingly. As example

00AM - 07AM if i sleep longer after wake up it shows another period 07AM - 10 AM. And so on...

While this 1000 eur worth watch tracks only scheduled sleep. I set my sleeping schedule from 00 AM to 07 AM. After 00 it goes to sleep mode. Even if im not sleep its in sleep mode thats fine. I can turn it off manually. Once im in a bed i put sleep mode on and its tracking accordingly. As 07AM comes if i wake up i got morning report. In case if its weekend and i decide to sleep longer from 07AM - 11 AM. The watch didnt show my sleep period for that in details. Its effect my training readiness score and overall sleep is poor. So in general if i sleep rondom periods in day time the watch did not detect it automatically. So whats the porpise of this feature to track sleeping only if you turn it manually. All the time you need to turn it on but it is not capable to detect auto sleeping periods why ?

  • The literature is very clear that current official versions do not track naps (effectively what your 7-10am sleep would be classed as). However if you install the latest Beta then it does include the ability to record naps.

However training readiness etc are based on more than sleep duration and a 7hr sleep duration if the rest of your sleep metrics are good is more than enough to give you decent training readiness and other health metrics - I would suggest looking at what those metrics are showing and drilling down into the detail. i.e. if training readiness is off what is the cause - on the watch press on the widget and then go to the second page - which metric isn't green. If sleep - then go to sleep on watch and go into the widget and explode out the sleep score section - what is driving a poor score.

Generally HRV is a major driver of all of these metrics - so if you HRV is bad its due to a habit/your lifestyle/ illness/ injury. The trick is trying to work out what it is.

At the momement my Training readiness is way down - and its currently due to my HRV status - sleep is not great but its ok - when I look at my sleep score my duration is always an issue (sleep apnea - use CPAP but still working in duration) but Stress is normally good - at moment its slightly down - which reflects the fact is have sniffles /slight stuffiness. HRV status is way unbalanced. Training status is strained. Acute load is very high - i.e. I am pushing my body hard - its final week before go into recovery cycle and body is showing the strain on a intense training cycle.

So sure training readiness should be low - I am not maximising my training at the mo - as pushed body too hard last couple of weeks - probably should have gone into recovery cycle 2 weeks ago, but have an op coming up, so wanted to time it with recovery.

  • I understand thst official current version do not track nap. Im on the latest beta version. Im not using nap function yet. What i'm trying to say that its not automatically extend sleeping period except scheduled. Even if after wake up and scheduled sleeping time is finished if i turn sleep mode manually back to on it does not show any more sleep except the sleep time in scheduled setup (period).

So lets say if i plan to wake up at 07 according to the alarm and sleep schedule is the same once my alarm rings up and the watch goes out of sleeping mode. My sleep result is fair due short sleep hours i feel not well as well thats true in longer period. My morning plans was canceled and i decide to sleep till 10 for better rest. I put my watch back to sleep mode. But once wake up it does not register that sleep period. Sleeping chart shows only the sleep time which was in schedule setup.

Everything else you mentioned i agree.

  • Im on the latest beta version.

In which case this post needs to be in the beta forum.

  • Maybe it's not how you would that it works but there is a simple workaround here.

My sleep schedule starts always after i really go to sleep and finishes later than when i wake up(few hours more, normally, as i wake up between 5:30 and 7-8 but my schedule is up to 10am).

This is not for a better recording but it's mostly because i don't want that the watch turns off the screen if i'm still awake or turns on when i could be still sleeping(weekends for example).

I turn on/off the sleep mode manually(shortcut to turn it on and pressing the start button when i want it to turn off).

  • again literature states that garmin only does one sleep period not multiple ones, which is why people have been asking for naps to get around this limitation. You would have been better off turning off the alarm option in naps and triggering the nap function.

It possibly didn't record and overwrite your original sleep - which is what it tends to do with multiple sleep sessions, due to prior sleep being longer. generally garmin only records sleep sessions as sleep if they are longer than 3.5hrs.

But as this is a beta version would suggest that despite this being how garmin sleep works - if you stil feel you have an issue raise a beta bug ticket - though based on my understanding on how gamrin sleep works this was only ever going to be the result based on what you did. Whether you consider garmin is right or wrong to work it like this is a different story - but doesn't make what happened an issue or wrong - its just the complexities of garmin sleep (and garmin doesn't track like that as what you have done isn't considered good sleep practice - would have been better to add a nap or more naps during the day - and as garmin state based on scientific evidence no benefit of naps greater than 40mins)
