14.68 Battery Drain

Hello,

since the update to 14.68 I see again that the battery drains very fast. Did someone has the same experience ?

Due to acutal illness (maybe I infect the Epix ;-) ) I´am not able to perform any workout or training, the watch is only

used as "watch" and "health-tracker". independent if AOD is on or off and heart / oximeter is on or off

I  have a constant drain which gives me approx. 4 to 5 to 6 days.

Sorry Garmin...for a 1k€ watch I expected the it works fine but it seems that with every update another issue is coming up !

regards

Stefan

  • I have lost 55% of battery live in 21 days. No AOD, battery saver at night, no GPS trainings. I would contact Garmin support if I was you.

  • Upgraded last week to 14.68 with the hope that this battery drain will get better.  No such luck, I charged my watch on Tuesday (it is so bad I am now keeping notes) by Wednesday it had dropped from 17days to 12 days, then this morning (Thursday) 5 days and now 2 days within a hour or being at work.  I am so frustrated with my device because when I purchased it last year I was getting 14/15 days without issue, but these recent updates are making me think I might as well have purchased an Apple watch even one of those lasts longer.

  • By hard reset, do you mean reset all settings or delete data and settings? I have the same issue and would like to try this.

  • I made a reset back to factory settings but keep the data. But at first I generate a backup file. After reset I restore the Backup back to the watch.

…but a week later I have the same issue again and there was no update during this time. It came back after a running session and stays in the high battery drain condition from then.

yesterday i made the reset again….and now its fine again with ~2% in the last 15 Hours.

My feeling is that a unknown combination of settings and events can provoke the battery drain issue.

  • Help, i have the same problem. Does anyone know how to roll back to the previous version pls?

  • It happens often and the strange thing is that it's not for everyone. It's gotta be related to the specific third party apps. I never used the backup function, but I'm afraid I'll have to. I have a 10%/day battery drain when I had 5to 6 before. No big deal, but strange. I may reset....or wait for the next update hoping that'll fix everything!

  • If you mean that some 3rd party apps are doing something specifically in their coding that is draining the battery, then that is a partially incorrect assumption. There are two reasons I say this. The first is that I only have six Connect IQ apps/widgets on my watch, four of which I programmed and two that come from Garmin (Hydration and Connect IQ Store); on 14.36 everything was fine but on 14.68 I have been experiencing the drain (but not to the extent that some people are). The second reason is that Connect IQ apps are run within a separate sandbox, to prevent developers from doing anything nefarious and to ensure the Garmin OS has control over everything and thus can prevent things like screen burn-in and excessive battery consumption. So, ultimately, even if this was the result of a poorly coded CIQ app, it's still a firmware issue as the device is supposed to be preventing that.

As an example to support my premise, there is (was?) a bug in the firmware on some devices that was keeping sensors (GNSS, HR, etc) running even after a CIQ app exited, even though the firmware is supposed to close out the sandbox, stop all processes, turn off all sensors, etc. So the workaround for developers is to explicitly stop the sensors, but it shouldn't be needed in the first place. And it's only an issue on some firmware versions of some devices. If you're interested, you can read more about this particular bug here:

  • Thanks for the great info. Always happy to learn something new even if the new knowledge comes from a mistake of mine. I'll sure read the link you indicate.

  • I'm joining those affected. Battery life has been terrible since the last update. I'm getting about 5-6 days when I was getting 14-16 before updating. Please Garmin, do something

  • Has Garmin responded about this issue? Are they even aware?
