Epix Pro Watch Faces available to Epix Gen 2

Dear Garmin team,

please consider making the native Epix pro watch faces available to the less than a year old Epix Gen 2. This wouldn’t be totally different from what you did with the Hill Score, jet lag, and overlay maps - which are fantastic additions and I appreciate tremendously. But the watch faces are fundamental to the user experience of the +$1000 that I paid for (Epix 2 Sapphire here!)

There is absolutely no technical reason why they are not available: the amoled screen has the exact same screen resolution for the 47mm size. Even Apple creates new native watch faces for models that were launched years ago!

even if you recommend your users to download watches faces from the Connect IQ… you know that these are a battery drain and the user experience is absolute trash.

please consider this feedback as you progress in your continuous software development and upcoming beta versions.

a fan and a pleased customer,

  • the idea that one would pay extra for a watch face that drains your battery or slows your watch down is hilarious

That's a totally reasonable position to take.  On the other hand, some people are willing to make that tradeoff so they can have a watch face that better fits their needs.  I'm one of them:

I charge my epix when I shower, so I have virtually infinite apparent battery life.  And only poorly made watch faces by hobbyists will slow your watch down.  There's plenty of low-effort stuff in the store, but I think savvy customers can tell them apart.

why would I pay to have a watch face for knock offs of Omega, Tag Heuer, or Rolex

I originally was in the same camp.  I thought it was silly to buy a Garmin and dress it up like a Rolex.  My first 2 watch faces were completely unique designs (albeit, they were inspired by Chevrolet Corvette and Audi A6 cars).

But customers kept writing in asking me to dupe specific real watches they liked. When I made the first one (the Carrera GAT), a bunch of customers wrote in with a lot of love and asked me to keep going, remaking the watches they love and admire.

Perhaps these users are not in the majority of Garmin customers, but it's really a pleasure to make things that a few passionate people really love.  This is just a hobby for me, and it brings me a lot of joy to get fan mail including photos seeing how people wear my faces.

  • I am ok with buying some watch faces if they are of good quality.

The one’s I have tried are off poor quality.. I do agree that Garmin needs to expand their watch face selection.

  • I also think the inbuilt Garmin ones are pretty poor and unimaginative.  I'd like a tool where we could create our own or have more control of Garmin's - maybe use as a template.  Even the basic Garmin ones (eg 3 small dials to show info), I often can't see the info as the watch hands are in the way.  Why aren't these fundamentals considered - allow us to decide foreground and background for example..

I have no real issue with the Tag, Breitling etc. ones but, call me mean, I'm not a fan of paying 5, 6, 7€ for a watch face.

, it's nice you get joy from the hobby and from the photos people send in but I imagine you get more from the money they send for the faces.  I tend to think of hobbies as a bit of fun, not something I generally associate with being paid for.  But I'll send you some photos of mine if you give out a few licenses Joy

Hey, friend.  I understand the internet cynicism, and I'm sorry you feel that way about my work.

If I was charging my typical rate to a client to build these faces, each face would cost about $10k to create.  I'm nowhere near breakeven - never-mind profit -- on any of this work, and I don't expect to ever reach that point. I consider it a hobby since it would be a very unprofitable business, otherwise. Laughing

With that said, I am saving for a house right now and about to get married.  The revenue helps me feel appreciated, recover some of that opportunity cost, and save up for my future.  It might give me an opportunity to take my future wife out to a nice dinner as a consolation for all those weekends I've spent coding instead of spending time together.

I'll take you up on your tongue-in-cheek offer: if you reply to this thread with 3-4 high qualify photos of you wearing a few of my watch faces that I can put in my community gallery, I'll happily DM you a license to one of the faces of your choice. Slight smile (See below: I think you may really like the LUXE Carrera Custom because of how you can customize the colors).

    I'm not a fan of paying 5, 6, 7€ for a watch face

Garmin charges $50-$300 for watch bands, which are very popular.  Of course you can also get some great deals from Aliexpress / amazon.  But in any case, spending a few €/$ to improve the appearance & functionality of a watch is something many people choose to do.  Software may not quite be physically tangible, but a good watch face takes hundreds of hours of programming, and it seems pretty fair to charge a reasonable price for that time and expertise.

allow us to decide foreground and background for example

You may actually really like the new one I launched: the LUXE Carrera Custom.  It specifically allows all colors to be customized, including the background.  I took all the customer feedback I received and turned it into this face.

why can't I select anything but VO2Max, steps, altitude, or body battery on the simpler looking analog Garmin faces for the Epix Pro

I know, right?  This is one of the reasons I wanted to make my own.  The built-in faces are missing metrics that I want to show.  I also added other "metrics" like moon cycle and active calories to my own faces.  There's stuff Garmin just won't offer by default, so I'm happy to take that into my own hands.

    Font is hard to see

Hey, thanks for the feedback!  I agree that the font is small on that one.  That face was hard, since I wasn't making it for others - I made that one for me (before I planned to list my stuff), and I wanted to be as authentic as possible.  But I am planning a new digital face that'll have a very readable font (designed for others).

  • Hi @myaro, so I installed the Carrera face as suggested and have to say............it's very good indeed!

    A bit of feedback?

    • Is there a 3 gauge face with just date on the right?
    • There's a typo in the App for Gauge Accent colour - and I don't mean your spelling of colour... Wink
    • I'd love a way to save a few personalised 'profiles'. I loved a plain black one I created and also a cobalt one but I have to 'lose' one to get to the other.
    • It's great that the trial lasts for 5 days and not an hour or two - it will really let users use them in daily life and tweak them a bit.
    • I really like how the dimmed version just shows the hands and key stats.
    • The faces I've done are simply heart rate on the left, steps on the right and the outer ring is my battery percentage and moves slowly around - really cool.
    • Can you confirm the Steps dial is a percentage of the Daily target?

Hopefully these pictures help others, it's not letting me upload any more:

  • Well said Vasco.  Why they are not available to the Epix 2 is beyond me.  As you say its a premium watch and should have the faces from the pro made available to it.  GARMIN PLEASE FIX!

  • A bit of feedback?

I'm so glad you like it!  Those are some great photos.

Is there a 3 gauge face with just date on the right?

    • The real TAG Carrera style that I was duping didn't have that layout.  But the other TAG replica face I made (the GAT Carrera) has that layout.

There's a typo in the App for Gauge Accent colour - and I don't mean your spelling of colour... Wink

    • Thanks for pointing that out!

I'd love a way to save a few personalised 'profiles'. I loved a plain black one I created and also a cobalt one but I have to 'lose' one to get to the other.

    • I wanted to add this, too!  But I'm right up against the limit of features I can add due to memory constraints, so I couldn't add this one in.

    • Yeah, it's really kind to your battery

Can you confirm the Steps dial is a percentage of the Daily target?

    • Yes, it is!

Let me know if you'd like a complimentary license to that one.  Happy to Direct Message it over.

  • Hi , thanks, that would be great.

Using the face for a few days and I realise my eyes aren't what they used to be and I'm finding the font in the gauges a little too small, an increase would be great.

The photos are strange - they look better when clicked!  How do images work here - I can't add any more.  A limit of storage per user?  Hopefully you were able to see the Google ones.

I think I'll try some more and can post image links if you like?
