14.31 - Total Ascent / Elevation Gain is wrong - Epix 2

Total Ascent/Elevation Gain for running activities on 14.31 is way off, since fw 13.22.

Running one hour flat terrain will typically show Total Ascent 300-400 meters.

One specific run should have been approx 140 meters, Garmin displays 1222 meters Total Ascent….

Used to be more spot on. I see that same run on May 20, with fw 13.19 shows Total Ascent 188 meters which is closer to very correct.

Have uploaded all data to Garmin for problem solving, and the problem is also displayed in this thread:

https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/fenix-7-series/public-beta-reports/i/public-beta-14-xx/14-27---elevation-gain-is-wrong

One run yesterday shows Total Ascent 542 meters in Garmin App - after Strava does elevation-correction on that run it says Elevation Gain 145 meters in Strava which is close to correct.

  • I am not seeing the same. Have you checked your current altitude and is it correct? Thinking maybe the port has picked up some dirt.

Have you tried hard rebooting the watch (I do it post every update and if there is any glitch) - as this normally resolves most glitches.

When you look at your elevation chart is there any spikes that could maybe attribute the increase - if so perhaps it was just an unusual spike (i.e. some wind getting the port enough to blast it).

  • Current altitude correct. And it does calibrate at all activities start.

Always hard rebooting after upgrade, and sync with GE.

Have washed the watch several times with regard to dirt in port.

No spikes. It started after 13.22.

So you are saying that if you take a 1 hr run on flat surface, it shows close to zero Total Ascent?

  • Not seeing anything unusual after upgrade to 14.31. My usual round course keeps logging roughly the same ascent/descent as with the previous fw version.

  • yes - pretty flat where I am - across a 3.5km (there & back) with elevation chart having 65m as min and 78m as max elevation - I got a total ascent of 16m and a total descent of 19m - that is on a there and back course. To me that is pretty accurate as min & max is correct based on DEM. Descent and Ascent total data is right as there are some minor ups and downs - so very likely correct. Differnce on total ascent to total descent despite being a there and back is due to going down the one side of the route, then being on the other side coming back (about 1.5m wide track)- at points there are fairly serious slopes where the one side can be at least 0.25-0.5m lower than the other side - so yes the total ascent/descent is unlikely to match.

  • That seems like very good accuracy. Not what I am experiencing, and never had that accuracy with Fenix 6 Pro or Epix 2.

But it used to be much better with previous firmwares anyhow. It is after 13.22 the Total Ascent is often way off, way to high.

Do you also have Elevation Corrections ‘disabled’ in Garmin Connect-web settings for activities?
(Disabled is the default setting for Fenix/Epix - and the setting I am using).

  • And yesterday, 1 hr run on flat terrain - 1471 meters Total Ascent. Strava says 45 meters on same run.

    Uploaded.

So either my Epix 2 is faulty or firmware need improvment.

  • yes default - basing on what I can see on the watch, on the app and on garmin connect web. Just enabled DEM correction in the web for this mornings activity and it added 4m of ascent and descent. strava - correcting elevation took it 4m the other way - reduced it.

As I said its pretty flat where I am.

Will say that this is pretty consistent (today was a regular route that I do a couple of times per week) with what I usually get on the route every week, and its pretty consistent  with  what I did over a year ago with the F6x Pro Soalr.
