This has started over the last few days - a map appears on the first page of the activity summary, but its either only partially rendered on zoomed in too far?
This seems to have somehow occured over the last few days - I have never seem a map on this page before.
It is very strange - it has happened again on a quick 1 mile walk and I never even used maps as its just local!

It's usually just a graphic that is present when any GPS activity is saved and independent of map use. If there is a portion of a map then it is obviously an error. An error that is usually corrected with a power cycle.
Have you tried power cycling the watch? That usually fixes it. And of course log the issue with Garmin Support if it's recurring.
I know exactly what you are talking about. This was from a swim eight days ago. The issue has not resurfaced after a restart.
