Epix keeps rebooting when connecting to computer (Mac)

Starting in the last day or two, every time I connect my Epix Gen 2 to my Mac via cable, it get the popup that I've always gotten asking "Use MTP (media transfer). If I choose yes, the watch connects, shows the time and green ring, for about 2 seconds, and then reboots.

If I choose "no", it'll show me the watch face and I can see that it's connected, but it doesn't show up on the computer and Garmin Express can't find it. Doesn't matter how long I leave it connected.

Have tried different cables, have tried rebooting the computer, rebooting the watch, different USB ports, nothing makes a difference. Have also updated via wifi.

I need to connect via the computer to update the maps.

Stymied at this point. Really don't want to factory reset because I'll lose all of my data, etc.

  • My Epix do not crash when connect to Mac. I never get asked for USB mode. Try set USB Mode to MTP in System menu on watch before connect it to your Mac and keep that setting. After that do you still get any crash?

  • Mine has also just started doing the same.
I've seen exactly the same symptoms as you have.
I normally connect it to my MacBook (which is seeing the issue) but I also have a Work Windows11 laptop, and it does the same thing.

This must have been a recent firmware 'upgrade' because it's always been fine before.

Interestingly the Windows laptop doesn't have the Garmin Express app, the MacBook does, I've also plugged it into the USB-C port on an iPad.

Hopefully someone from Garmin will respond and / or come up with an answer Fingers crossed

Working fine on the two Mac computers we had win our house - MacBook Pro and Mac mini.
