small scratches on the HR sensors Epix Pro

does anyone else experience this too. i have very small scratches on my sensors of my garmin epix pro. I only do running and after exercising I rinse it off in the shower with plain water and nothing else. then I dry and clean it with a microfiber cloth. but now I notice if you hold it close to the light that there are small scratches on the sensors and this already within 2 months! does anyone else experience this and would it affect the measurement? please let me know

  • I also maintain it very well and neatly and now so quickly from those small scratches. then you take sapphire and then you still have scratches on the back right where the sensors are :-(

  • that is indeed very strange. I just try to live with it. because garmin says it's not the product.

  • My guess (from experience) is that it's caused by the microfiber cloth.  Let me explain...

First, I have a decent size "luxury" watch collection (Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Sinn etc).  I used to rinse my watches under the running water with some mild liquid soap and worked great for 15 years.  Then, I bought a Sinn 556i (a nice watch, with a beautiful dial).  BUT, this was my first watch that had "outer AR coating" on the sapphire.  The gain here, is that is makes the dial look DEEP black and nice.  The con is that it has a thin layer of material applied on the outside of the glass, which makes it more prone to scratches.

But, I knew this when I bought it.  I told myself, that I already take great care of my watches and is not a problem.  Wash the watch the same and dry with the microfiber cloth (as you).  Not rocket science.

BUT..  after just days, I had scratches!  WTF??  (and this is a $2k watch, lol).  why??

    THE CLOTH.

    But..  why?

Because I did not realize that on a much closer scale, the cloth collects dust, dirt and little, microscopic fragments over time.  I never noticed before because all my other watches had raw sapphire glass (never going to scratch it).  But, on the AR coated one (or anything non harden like sapphire) this is all open game for scratches FROM the cloth.

    The solution?

You need to keep the cloth in a zip-loc bag and wash it often in the laundry.  I actually then found that I don't even need to "dry" the watch face at all and the less rubbing the better.  So, after I rinse with my hand / fingers under soap and running water, you remove, give it a shake and let dry or gently pat dry.

The front of your Garmin watch with sapphire, you can wipe dry with whatever you want.. will be fine.  The back (sensor) is not sapphire.  So, this will scratch easily.  Its most likely a tiny practical on the cloth that can't be seen with your eyes, and this was rubbed into the material.

  • Excellent thoughts but anyway sensor must be more protective

  • thanks for your nice explanation. but will it influence the measurements at . as someone also indicated, sweat collects all day, dirt that would also cause more scratches than?

  • totally agree. for that money for sure

  • The minor scratches I have on my 6 Pro sensor seem to have zero effect on the data. I live in the Middle East where sweat and sand are constant issues, and as I said earlier I don't take any special care of my watches as I bought them to wear for hard use. Rinsing and drying would not have prevented any of the damage to my watches as such damage has, almost exclusively, been due to contact damage on the exposed outer surfaces whilst actively wearing the watches. No damage to any of the sapphire crystals though. I have found all of the watches from the Fenix 3 through to the Fenix 7 to be robust enough for their intended use.

  • but it's still weird. You have had your Fenix 7 for 19 months now and there are no scratches anywhere in the area where you live. and on your Fenix 6 pro, then you would expect that the Fenix 7 would also suffer from this, wouldn't you? Do you also happen to have a photo of your Fenix 6 pro with the scratches?

  • I think its pure luck, good or bad.

  • you can indeed see a few small scratches but not as many as I have. maybe it's just bad luck on my part. no idea
