EPIX Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire - "Cannot unlock maps" error (or msg) - Why

EPIX Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire - "Cannot unlock maps" error (or msg) - Why

I haven't loaded any maps unless they were automatically updated. But I'm seeing what looks like an error.  When I power off, then power on, I get a message that says, "Cannot unlock maps" and a checkbox to click with START.  No indication what the problem is.  Maps seem to work ok.

I did see a map (Outdoor maps+) that does need a subscription but that's also on my Fenix 7x PRO, and it doesn't show the warning/error.  And I have the same maps listed in the Map Manager for both my Epix Pro and my Fenix 7x Pro Sapphire Solar. So, I don't think that is the problem.

1) Why am I seeing this warning?

2) Is it really an error, or just a warning about something?

3) How do I know which map is causing it?

4) How do I fix it?

Thanks

Mike

  • Thanks Oxnull, this fixed the problem on my Fenix 7 Pro sapphire

  • I've fallen victim to the same issue. Brand new Epix Pro fresh out of the box.  Received the "cannot unlock maps" after updating through Garmin Express  to software version 17.23.  I've tried the steps given by Oxnull without sucess. Also did a hard reset, and unistalled and reinstalled Garmin Express. After re-adding my watch, it looked like all was well until I performed a restart and received the same error

  • worked for me as well. epix pro 51 july 2024

  • solution didnt work for me either. What should I do next?

  • Reach out to Product Support through their website at https://support.garmin.com.

  • after reading a signficant number of similar posts and the Garmin website, I tried reinstalling each map through Garmin Express without sccess. Then I tried removing each map, and then re-installing it one at a time. After removing the topo map for North America, the error stopped. Re-installed the map and all appears well for now.

  • It's August 2024, and I have just had the same issue - so clearly it's still not resolved. @Oxnull's fix worked for me.

  • It did work even for Fenix epic Pro

  • I tried the 3 files mentioned by @Oxnull and that didn't do the trick either.

I guess I can try whacking the US mainland and the Canada/Alaska maps... Ugh.

  • I ended up using Garmin Express to delete ALL maps--then adding them back.

Per a tip on the Support page, I tried to "Safely Remove" the USB device for the watch--but the icon didn't exist. Per Microsoft's help, I went into Settings, Bluetooth & Devices, Devices, then finding the watch, clicking the vertical 3 dots, the selecting "Remove Device".

It also sat a bit after completing before I removed the device. It sounds (from the Garmin Support page) like there's a possibility that the drivers/watch could cache some information being written to the watch so Garmin Express thinks it is finished--but the data is still being written to the watch. In that case, yanking the USB plug could result in a corrupted file(s)....

Not sure what fixed it--but it seems to be OK finally.
