Epix Gen 2: no way to have "Wrist Gesture" working during an activity with Always On Display set to OFF

I've received a week ago a Epix Gen 2 (16 Gb memory, no sapphire glass) updated to the latest 13.22 firmware. While I have no problem in getting the display ON when i rotate the wrist when I'm in GENERAL USE, there is no way to have the same settings working DURING ACTIVITY, although the display settings are as follows:

Display -> During Activity:

     Always On Display: OFF

     Brightness: set to max

     Wrist Gesture: ON

     Timeout: 8 seconds

I entered the settings directly from the watch or alternatively from the App on my smartphone but I don't see any differences in the (faluty) behavior of the Epix. I tried to restart the Epix a fiew times with no results. Changing the Touchscreen ON or OFF does not solve the problem. Every time I start a Run, after 8 seconds the display becomes dark and is not activated by wrist rotation. To display the running data I need to press a button or to touch the screen (when Touchscreen is ON). The display turns on automatically only when an interval is reached (every km in my case).

What I'm doing wrong?

I know there is a possibility to assign different Power Modes to different activities but I would like to avoid to add that layer of complexity, furthermore I do no see a specific setting for "Wrist Gesture" in the Power Mode menu.

Thanks for your help.

  • wrist gesture works differently from normal to activity. With normal twisting the wrist is often enough to trigger it, however due to certain activities this is not acceptable (i.e. rowing/padding etc - sports where you may use your wrist quite a bit) - thus the gesture is more triggered towards lifting your arm up and turning it towards your eyes (note that there still seems to be a bug with this and sometimes it will not properly wake and buttontouch required - generally only occurs if screen been off for a whle - seems to struggle to wake it up - but doesnt' do this all the time either).

    In normal when the screen times out it goes black; during and activity as long as you keep your arm up the screen will dim down but not turn off until you drop your arm.

    Would suggest rebooting the watch and then trying the above.

    While you can adjust touch/ display via power modes to adjust the default; wrist gesture setting are default only so can only be set for sleep, normal & activity.

  • Thanks  for your feedback. However, with Always On Display: OFF and Wrist Gesture: ON there I could find no gestures that wake up the screen of my Epix 2. Yesterday I was running with Always On Display: ON and Wrist Gesture: ON and the screen (correctly) got brigther as soon as I rotate my wrist.

    I found this behaviour annoying, particularly for activities that last several hours. In this scenario, leaving the Always On Display: ON significantly increases the overall battery consumption.

  • Okay, I just did a test for you.   I went to display settings and set the following:

    "During Activity"

    AOD = OFF

    Guesture = ON

    TO = 8sec

    Redshift = OFF

    I went to strength as a test and started the activity.  The screen went off.  When I raise my arm up and turn, the screen comes on (just like you want).

    Normally, I do use the AOD, so this does change it.

    I hope that helps.

  • Since I've also had an Epix 2 Pro for a few days, I'm just as dissatisfied as you are when it comes to the AOD and gesture recognition. And not only when running, but especially when cycling. As far as I know, the problem with gesture recognition is that the arm has to be brought almost horizontally in front of the body so that the display stays bright for the preset time - 15 seconds for me. If the arm hangs down a bit when running or is on the handlebars when cycling, the Epix interprets this as sleep mode and remains in the dimmed state. If your arm hangs down a bit while running or stretched out on the handlebars while cycling and then moves your wrist or taps the screen with your other hand, this will brighten the display, but only for 1 to 2 seconds. The Epix therefore immediately returns to dimming mode, since the arm is hanging or stretched out on the handlebars. Taking your hand off the handlebars and moving it relatively far up and to the side is not really practical when cycling and, in my opinion, in some situations it is not entirely safe. Even with demanding running training, I find this attitude bad and throws me out of rhythm or demands too much of my attention.

    In my opinion, activities such as cycling or running would therefore require a separate sports-gesture-mode for activities that would also illuminate the display brightly for the preset time when the arm is stretched.

  • Thanks. What's "Redshift"? I do not have such an option.

  • I've never considered that, as you said, "the arm has to be brought almost horizontally in front of the body so that the display stays bright for the preset time". I will try that but, as you already mentioned, this is completely impractical during a sport activity.

  • Ah, so this tells me that you don't have the most recent update. :-)

    Redshift is a display mode for nighttime.  (turns the whole screen red).  See DC-rainmakers video on this with a google search.  You need to update your watch... maybe these effects your other problem too.

  • This is not need.  It works just fine.  Trust me ;-)

  • If a check for a software update I do not get any new one. I'm on 13.22 firmware. Consider that I have the "old" 2022 16 gb model (not the new "pro" models) and that I live in Europe.

  • EDIT - I figured it out..  you need the new one that came out... see this video:  (6) Garmin Fenix 7 & Epix July Beta Update: Full Details! - YouTube

    Humm..  well that I am not sure of.  13.22 is what I am running as well (but is different on the Pro model.  See video above).

    You don't have Redshift mode?  Please do some research on this today and deep dive in your watch settings and see if you have this.  This is part of the latest update. If you don't, then maybe something else going on here..
