Airplane mode and being able to use Bluetooth

Was flying yesterday and looking forward to listening to a few podcasts, but it didn't seem to be possible..

Airplane mode was on, but Bluetooth seemed to be switched off as well. Is this correct for an Epix on 13.22 firmware?

It is fairly standard for phones to allow this, but not Garmins it seems

Your watch doesn't have cellular communications, so if you're riding in an airplane, and you want bluetooth to be on, then just don't use airplane mode.

Yes, this is correct operation.

From the Owner's Manual:

Airplane Mode turns OFF ALL wireless communications, including Bluetooth.

Your watch doesn't have cellular communications, so if you're riding in an airplane, and you want bluetooth to be on, then just don't use airplane mode.

When the flight attendant says "please put your devices in airplane mode" they just mean your devices with cellular communications. They don't care about wifi and bluetooth, you can leave those on.

Garmin just calls it "airplane mode" because it's what we're all used to using on our phones to turn off all the radios. It's not called that because you have to use that mode on an airplane - you don't.
