Canoeing Activity

Hi folks - I was wondering what my fellow canoeists use as a custom activity for solo canoeing?  I have the Canoe Pro app from the store, but it doesn't permit navigation.  I am currently using the default kayaking app (in particular because I have a pack boat-style canoe which I paddle with a kayak paddle.  However, the compulsive part of my brain rebels every time I review my activities and, in spite of renaming the kayak app as "paddle boat", the activity itself shows up as a kayaking.  Thanks!

  • would just use kayak until a canoe option becomes available as it has all the metric info you would want or need.

Unless you actually do kayak - wouldn't even bother changing it.

  • I wish they had this as well. Some competitors like Polar watches have Canoeing in their list of activities.

How do we officially send a request to Garmin for this?

  • Canoeing is available in Garmin Connect, so you can change the activity type there, once recorded and saved. If you wish that the activities are being saved already with the correct type, use a Connect IQ app, such as for example the "Any Activity". It allows setting the right activity type on watches not supporting the respective sport natively.

  • Go through your garmin website via their support function: https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/

    Specifiy its for the watch.

This is likely to come as they are adding more categorization options, however as this has specific metrics might take a little bit longer, but considering how close it is to SUP and kayak it should really be an easy win for them.

  • This is good, didn't realize this. Thanks for pointing it out.

Still, it would be nice for canoeing to be a "first class citizen activity".

  • what you have to realize is that for 90% of those watches out there that offer canoeing all it really is is a cardio activity with gps and really the canoeing is just a categorization lable i.e. does HR, time, distance, calories (in some cases the calories may be adjusted for the correct calorie met value for canoeing). In the past Garmin hasn't taken this approach and the vast majority of their activity options have all included sport specific metrics. it is only pretty recently that they have changed this stance and have now agreed to continue to provide data specific activities but also include more generic activity categorization options (with updated calorie met values) - this detail was provided by Ray of DC Rainmakers in a post a while back and we have certainly seem a slew of new options in recent updates. They seem to be providing the most requestted options first - so not sure if people just haven't been asking for canoeing or whether its not been dropped yet due to the fact they can provide data specific metrics to it and thus have to tweak the current metric profiles they have for SUP,and kayaking to make sure they are accurate for canoeing.

  • They really should add it. Canoeing is at least as popular as SUP.

One tip for my fellow canoeists here, on my new Epix Pro 2 I noticed "SUP" is a much better activity profile to track canoeing compared to "Kayak". The SUP activity profile is set up to track strokes, stroke rate, and distance per stroke. The kayak profile is simply time, distance and HR. For now, I will be tracking canoeing as SUP in the field and then changing it to canoeing in Garmin Connect retroactively. Garmin, please make Canoeing its own profile!!!!!! We have badminton but not canoeing, which doesn't make sense for an adventure-tracking watch. Canoeing and wilderness canoe tripping is one of the most popular ways to explore the backcountry in the US and Canada. One of the main reasons I got Epix is to be able to quickly glance at a map on my Epix while paddling rather than getting my phone out of my PFD.

  • (need to submit this via the support links on the garmin website, as a feature request, as they seldom pick up suggestions from the forum, and if they do they will usually ask for a feature request too).

  • You can change rename the type of activity to what ever you would like once it’s on Garmin connect. Just touch the pencil icon
