Will some of the Epix software updates only be done via Garmin Express?

When I access Garmin Express I see a number next to my watch picture despite having recently synched the watch via Bluetooth to my phone as well as via WI-FI.

I understand that maps will only update via Garmin Express due to the file size. I am just not sure why these other small updates don’t get done when syncing via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. I think some of these small updates are just fitness metric true ups with my Edge 540.

  • Software updates have been received through both the Connect Mobile APP and through Garmin Express for many generations of outdoor watches at this point and the process will continue. A software update over Wi-Fi is newer but is also another option.

You can also update your maps through your watch Map Manager found when you quick press your top right button. However, the maps are incredibly large and only getting bigger so using Garmin Express with a solid broad band internet certainly works best and and will complete significantly faster.

As for the other updates pending that do not seem to be meant for your watch, when you go to Garmin Connect web and select the watch icon on the top right, you should see those pending updates as a white number in a blue circle. If you select the update bubble, you should be able to see what the updates are for and you can click the small x to remove them to resolve your issue.

If those updates are indeed critical, they will be queued again later.

  • Thank you Chris

What I am finding unusual is that in Garmin Express I see a blue circle with a number in it next to my watch picture. When I log in to Garmin Connect web to learn more about the update, as you described above by selecting the watch icon, I do not see a circle with a number in it as I see in Express.

I am just looking for a definitive way to determine if my Epix or Edge 540 has an update to install.

  • Try removing both of your devices from Garmin Express then add only one back at a time.

  • Define recently. As you note those numbers typically represent TrueUp data and might not be reflected instantly in GE. They are not the same as device updates.

You'll know if there are device updates available as they are usually indicated in GE with a box telling you they are available. As noted, if you click on View Details you can see what is there to be installed

as far as I know on GE windows this info shows only when ...

    • there is NO device connected when selecting 'view details'
    • after which GE request to connect the device ...
    • hence, you do not get the 'view details' link when a device is connected (auto install)
  • This is GE MacOS so perhaps there's a difference

GE windows behaves the same as yours when it is about CIQ app updates

    • I have turned of auto CIQ updates

leaves the device firmware update behavior ? suspect Mac behavior same as Windows version, no ?

Not sure. Pretty certain I've seen the same with other updates. It's just that I have no other updates at the moment.
