Dissapointing registration of steps during playing golf

Steps are not calculated. Steps are registered using the accelerometer.

Your watch/wrist needs to move up and down during walking. Pushing/Pulling a trolley will 

stop the watch from counting steps as example (or make it very hard to register steps). 

This will happen with a 200$ Garmin and with a 2,000 $ Garmin (or AppleWatch or ....). They all 

use the accelerometer that needs to register the movement of walking.

That means, the programmers didn't know that! If they know that, they can calculate the steps via the distance...

So it makes no sense to register the steps ... I think, there is no option to show the distance instead of steps, or?

The distance is recorded with GPS during your golf workout if you record it. 

If you don't record with GPS, it will only count steps and will multiply the steps with your step length. 

You can see this distance (only based on steps) on the 3rd page of the steps glance for the past 7 days.
Or you have a look on the steps page on Garmin Connect. 

That means, if I make a slow walk to the city (1.5 km) and I have my hands inthe pocket, no steps are registered, because I do not move my arms. But why was it correct working with steps on my S60?

No. In the pocket your arm will still move up and down with your body and it will register the steps. If your arm will not go up and down (trolley or stroller) it will not or only hard register steps.

You can get your missed steps back if you wear your watch on the arm you use to brush your teeth ;)

I made just a small test ;-) ... I let my left arm with the watch hang down quietly, no movement, and made a little walk in my apartment .... every step is beeing registered ... but now, if I have my left arm horizontal like pushing my trolly, no steps are registered ... my dear, I must learn to push my trolley only with the right hand ... ;-) ....

... and further interesting: if I have my arm horizontal like wearing an umbrella, so the watch shows to the left, steps are registered, if the watch shows to the top, no steps a registered ... is there any information how the sensor is technical working?

It will still register the movement when the watch is looking upright. But it seems the

logic in the software will ignore it (based on your test)

I don't think Garmin will disclose the logic behind it. 

... and it could be so easy: Golf -> GPS on: steps=distance/step width, GPS off: steps by movement of watch ... 

I'm thinking too: Garmin will not change it ... unfortunately ... ;-(
