Having my watch face only lite with touch during activity

I would like to have my display only on when doing longer activities like golf, cycling, hiking and running. Since the new update I seem to have the display always on and it goes through battery vert quickly. Can’t seem to figure out if I can set it up to have only touch mode for those activities. Have read some forms but can’t get it to work.

  • Using app - open app on phone, then press phone icon.

Touch - you have 3 options:

    a) Default: settings - system - touch - during activity. Can set this as off, on or only on for map use.

    b) Override deffault: activities & apps - select activity i.e. hike - touch: select option i.e. system (uses the default), on, off, map only.

    c) Hotkeys (can use these to override touch setting at any time) and or to lock buttons and touch): system - hot keys. Select the hotkey combo you want to use and set it to Touch (to turn touch on/off) - I use back + light;  or lock/unlock device (to lock/unlock touch & buttons) - Hold Start.

Display - you have three options:

    a) Default system - settings - system - display - during activity.  Toggle AOD to either on or off as your default. Can also set whether wrist gesture is active or not.

    b) Power mode (can adjust how default works - you will have to create a power mode to have the opposite of what your default is - personally I created one for AOD on and one for AOD off that way if I change my default I can quickly adjust the power mode); Activities & apps - select your activity i.e. hike - power mode - and select AOD off if that is what you want.

    c) Turn off display - this is watch based. This will basically turn off the display and it will ignore wirst gestures - display iwill only respond to touch or button and once it times out it will turn off again (great for cinema for example):. Long press light button until control wheel comes up then release button (if you continue to hold it will bring up assistance, and if you continue to hold through that it will turn off your watch - what Garmin calls a hard reboot). On the control wheel look for the icon of a watch that has a diagonal slash through it, it should be a grey icon that is titled display on. Press and will change to a green icon called display off. Note that when display is off and you press button / touch to wake the screen it is initially dim and will take a second or two for the ambient sensor to turn on and correct brightness.

Power modes (can only do from watch); Menu (long press left middle button) - Power manager - power modes - Add new.. Put in description, and can then  adjust GPS, Music, Phone connectivity, HR, SPO2, Map, AOD on/off,  Brightness, Accessories.

Note that if any of these settings are greyed out it due to a setting i.e. if display off is toggled on AOD option will be greyed out (disabled) - would need to toggle display back on to enable it. etc etc.

  • Thanks for the help jaamgans. I will give those options a try.
