Log Time (while not in activity) - Shortcut or app?

Hello

Is there a way or method to record/log a timestamp via a shortcut on a Garmin watch?  Something like a "Lap" function; except, without requiring that I've started an activity like the "Lap" function requires?

I have been following routines throughout the day and am considering tracking certain habits.  These are fixed lists, so all I really need is the ability to record a timestamp without having to break out a notebook and/or MS Excel at inconvenient times.

I just wanted to check if anyone had pointers before going in the weeds on this myself.  If it doesn't exist, I'm sure I'll start down a rabbit hole researching app development for Garmin.  Not sure how restrictive it is, I am decent at programming, just really hoping to find a solution without having to spend that much effort.  I could really use the help tracking routines...

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

  • stopwatch - can set a hotlink to it.

It will even sync it like an activity and you can see all the lap button presses.

  • Thanks!   I see the hot key for the default stopwatch app.  It’s very cool you can save the activity and sync the laps - I missed that feature when I looked at it earlier.

However, I unfortunately can’t mark a lap with a hot key using the default stopwatch app.  The “Lap” hot key only syncs to activities so when I press it my way says “no current activity”.  Is this a glitch, is there a way around this, or a is there feature request forum?  Is there maybe a third party app, can third party apps even use hot keys?

Thanks for help with any of these questions.  The default stopwatch app is pretty cool but ideally looking to store time stamps with a process running in the background or similar

Do not understand what you are saying here at all

You use hotkey to go to stopwatch (or long press light button to open control wheel and go to clocks, then select stopwatch).

You press start button (should be right top button) to start the stopwatch. You then use your normal lap button (should be left bottom button). This will then trigger a lap - you can see the time for each lap button press. The top big time is of course the continuous time - the time just below it is the current lap time, and then you get a list of the laps times below that.

When ready to stop - press start button (right top) then menu button (left middle) - should now have a save activity option. Select that. It should now sync it through to the connect app. DO NOT PRESS DONE - unless you don't want to save the activity to connect app - if you want to save the activity to sync to connect app you have to press save activity. Done just resets the stopwatch clearing all your data.

If the lap button isn't working - press the menu button (left middle) - scroll down the list of options and turn on the lap key option.

In the connect app you can now see your lap detail (3 page icon - oval track arrow icon) - Will show all your lap times. No option to edit lap times or add detail, other than adding to the note section of the activity - when in activity press menu optoin (should be top right 3 vertical dots - is for android) - edit activity. Can now add notes, change the name of the activity adn change type - cateogrize as event type etc.

Connect web - just gives the same options as the app. but also does allow you to put in percevied effect, elevation etc.

  • Sorry, let me explain another way.  I'm hoping to track timestamps throughout an entire 24hour day.  For example, when I wake up record time.  When I finish morning routine, record time.  When I head to work, record time.  When I break for lunch, record time.  When I leave work, record time.  Except I'd like to do it in even more often than I suggest in my example - I'm trying to build habits but I keep losing time in places I can't identify (i.e., maybe its traffic, maybe its getting distracted on my morning routine, etc).

The tricky part with the default Stopwatch App is that I'd have to leave it running as a stopwatch all day, and press the lap key inside the application whenever I complete anything.  This isn't ideal because I have to open the stopwatch everytime I want to record a lap.  Note: there *is* a "Lap" hotkey that I can pair to a button press; however, the Lap Hotkey does not work with the Stopwatch App - the stopwatch app forces you to be in the app physically to record a lap.

So, I am still looking for a way to record timestamps conveniently throughout the day.

  • Since we are taking about an outdoors/sport watch, and what you are describing doesn't fall into either category (even remotely), I'm quite sceptical that you'd find any better options than the ones already described on this thread, sorry.

  • Someone could still make a widget/app that would do that. That log would not be stored in the Garmin infrastructure but would have to be stored somewhere else (or it creates a short activity every-time as a timestamp). And that would still require two interactions with the watch at least.
