Steps Tracking off on Desk Treadmill

Has anyone successfully hacked how to track steps with a desk treadmill where your arms don't move? I usually try Garmin watch on my ankle but it doubles the steps, so you end up with something like 30,000 steps when you've only done in reality 15,000 steps. I average 7-9 miles daily at work on a desk treadmill, usually arms not swinging (typing instead), usual speed 3.0mph.

With Daily Steps being off, it throws off my health readings (Epix Gen 2). My steps were also incorrect with Forerunner 235 previously - both watches double the steps nearly, on the ankle.

Anyone solved this? I've searched Reddit, etc. and foot pod rec's usually state that foot pods won't update Daily Steps either. I haven't tested this as I don't own a pod. Any tips?

  • My recommendation don't bother with the vivoki. I have one and stopped using it. What I did was purchase a vivosmart 4, 3  or any older Garmin watch that has Bluetooth connectivity to Garmin connect. Once added to your account just stick it in your pocket. Keep your Fenix 7 on and they will both workout steps between them. You will not get double steps and best part your all day heart rate will be there from the Fenix 7. Only thing the others device for me the vivosmart 4 only sends step data to my account.

  • Ohh that's clever! I'll need to give that a try. Thanks for sharing!

I finally got the Vivoki to work, but it needs its own Pixel 1 with Garmin Connect v3.2 (both some 7 years old) to work with this 10-year old Vivoki device. Sweat smile Very cumbersome.

Guess I'll look for a Vivosmart now and sell the Vivoki back on Ebay.

  • I have a pixel 7 Pro and the vivoki works fine you just have to wake it up and sync it.....pin in the but ....save the hassle get a cheap old Garmin device that supports Bluetooth. They all use the same tech to count steps

  • hey @4190999, I have iphone and the latest app updates. It sync fine, you just have to add it as a separate Garmin device and hit the refresh button on Connect. I make sure it's awake (thump the vivoki).

  • Thank you for the tips !

    Just two questions —

    1. Do you set up your Vivosmart as the primary device in Garmin Connect, or leave your wrist Fenix7 as the primary device?
    2. Do you start a Treadmill activity or just let the watch do it's thing without an activity?

I tried it out today with my main Fenix 7 as the primary device, and a Forerunner 45 in my pocket. No treadmill activity. It mostly worked!

A couple of times the Forerunner45 pulled the lower amount of steps steps from Garmin Connect, instead of uploading the steps it had recorded.

I'm excited to be able to track the treadmill steps!!
