Sleep tracking showing lots of "awake", in first half of sleep - When I am not awake.

As title says, Sleep tracking is showing me as being awake for 20-30minute periods in the first half of my sleep.
Normally 4 or 5 of these, even though I am sleeping right through.

Had the same issue with my FR255 - is there a way of resetting the sleep tracking?

  • The only thing you can do with Sleep is edit the time you went to sleep and time you awoke. Unfortunately, with OHR on the wrist, depending on how tight or loose you wear it, your typical resting bpm (which may be drastically different from the average), and how much of a mover you are at night. As long as it's getting to bed and awake right for me, I'm happy. Additionally, unless you are wearing something that's measuring with Electroencephalography (EEG), OHR will for now, kind of be a crap shot.

  • When using high quality HR and HRV measurements, the Firstbeat algorithm has an average agreement around 66%. This means that each block of 5s of sleep has that chance of being assigned to a sleep phase that a sleep expert would assign using polysomnography tools. As a reference, sleep experts have an agreement of around 85% among themselves.

As the white paper says, this is "reasonably" good. In real life, the HR and HRV data from the wrist HR will be much worse than ECG devices. So you can assume that the accuracy of sleep phase classification will be (much) lower than 2/3. Several users, including me, report that the awake/sleep detection is poor (resulting in false nap detection, false sleep during slow/no activity periods, or under reported awake periods) while the algorithm accuracy is 94%! That tells me something about the degradation after taking into account data collection and/or specific implementation limitations/choices.

Accuracy can vary widely depending on the individual, both at the algorithm level and at the data collection level.

  • My resting HR is around 42-25. Could that be part of the reason?
I swear when I first got the FR255 - it would not do this. Then after a certain update, it all kinda went wrong!
Was hoping would be different on the Epix.

  • I just got my Epix 2 a few days ago and I'm getting the same readings. I upgraded from the Venu which seemed to be more accurate, or at least didn't show I was awake when I wasn't.

I've worn the epix to sleep for the past 3 nights and it'll show I was awake from anywhere between a total of 30 mins to over an hour when I actually slept through.

The Venu would only detect me as awake when my son would occasionally wake up, crawl into bed with me so I'll carry him back to his room and tuck him in.

I'd be interested in finding a fix for the Epix aw well...

  • As  posted, there is going to be variance among the general population. So it's possible a lower heart rate is throwing it off. I wear an oura competitor called RingConn. For funsies here's some comparisons.
