Outdoor cycling heart rate issues

I need some help. I did my first outdoor ride of the year a month ago after riding indoors for the winter. My heart rate monitor wouldn't exceed 100 bpm. I rode yesterday and my heart rate ranged from 160 to 170. So all is good. Well, today I rode again and my heart rate, again, wouldn't go over 100 bpm. I stopped and switched from bike outdoors to bike indoors and my heart rate was back to the 160-170 range. Has anyone experienced this or have a solution? I don't use a chest monitor, if that is what you're wondering and I'm up to date on all updates.  Further, this was not an issue last summer.

  • Does the beta address this in thr changelist and where have Garmin said they recognise the issue?

My side they say there is no issue (even though I think there is)

  • I didn't see it in the list, unfortunately.  I've had numerous conversations with them on the subject, I'm surprised they didn't say to you that they are working on it.  I think one of the earlier software updates caused those problem as I didn't have the issue last year.

  • They do not appear convinced even though the HR comparisions very clearly shows the same issue that myself, others in this thread and Quantified Scientist have noted with HR being very low and remaining low. Although your issue seems to be slightly different as you never see HR over 100 bpm I think?

  • Make sure following this guide from Garmin https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=xQwjQjzUew4BF1GYcusE59

Maybe it solves the issue or maybe it doesn’t. Anyhow with that said for high heart rate accuracy I recommend to wear a chest strap when biking outdoors and if combined with power sensor you will also get your FTP detected automatically

  • I got ignored by Garmin support too, much like many of the replies on here they ignored that it used to work fine but now doesn't. Seemingly the firmware update has affected the flow of blood to my wrist or the angle that I hold my wrist. It's pretty insulting.

I pushed support but they just send me a chest strap.

  • It's pretty insulting.

I wasn't insulted but I went to a lot of effort using up to 3 watches, 745 paired to an HRM mounted to my handle bars and a 965 and Epix Pro 51mm on left and right wirst and sent them activity links and even laid it out on a plate for them uploading and making public everything to DC Rainmaker's Analyser tool.

The issue - exactly as so well documented by Quantified Scientist! - is blatantly obvious - a clear trend for HR to lock low and get stuck low for minutes at a time - very obvious on hill ascents where power from a power meter increases but HR decreases...which is about as big a red flag as you can get, because you can't put out more power but drop HR...! Unless you are using an Epix apparently!!

There seems to be more of a problem with defective hardware here than it seems to be a general problem for the majority of users.

There is no evidence it is defective hardware - or Garmin would be replacing these so-called defective devices rather than suggesting everything is fine and to use an HRM Pro!I would suggest if an optical HRM produces repeatable reports in the cycling use-case but decent results when resting, walking or running then it is an issue with the algorithm. That seems more likely to me.

  • Problem is even hrm pro plus has its own problems. Been getting random spikes and respiration disconnects ( gaps of no data ) and not detecting threshold in auto mode.

Been using hrm pro plus since day one and problem only started in last few months.it id wetted, completed soaked and I even tried electro gels.  At times get weird 2 second spikes up of 10 bpm for no reason.. I  Even bought second one and still same problem.

My run workout today completely not show respiratory data chart again!  Was fine till yesterday.  Not sure what is going on sigh...  A month ago I even bite the bullet and factory resetted, still same.

But disappointed consider I am deep invested into Garmin ecosystem.
