Outdoor cycling heart rate issues

I need some help. I did my first outdoor ride of the year a month ago after riding indoors for the winter. My heart rate monitor wouldn't exceed 100 bpm. I rode yesterday and my heart rate ranged from 160 to 170. So all is good. Well, today I rode again and my heart rate, again, wouldn't go over 100 bpm. I stopped and switched from bike outdoors to bike indoors and my heart rate was back to the 160-170 range. Has anyone experienced this or have a solution? I don't use a chest monitor, if that is what you're wondering and I'm up to date on all updates.  Further, this was not an issue last summer.

  • This is similar to my results.  My heart rate wouldn't exceed 100 for 7/8 of my first ride this year and then started measuring correctly, too late to make a difference.  I fully agree this is a software issue.  Others are reporting similar for hiking and Garmin said that there are so many variables in hiking that can affect accuracy like the movement of your arms.  They seem to want to blame users for the issues, not a wise move in this connected world.

    Agreed, that would be daft.

If I plot against elevation (orange line), when climbing my HR should increase, not decrease!

Plus this was on a nice road with my hands on the handlebars so not quite sure they'd get far with that line if they decide to take it...

  • That’s weird. I never have issue with my 51mm fénix and now new Epix while cycling or running. Only weight lifting. Cycling is probably the most accurate for me compared to AWU and HRM pro

I did an outdoor bike ride yesterday, and mine seemed fine (pro sapphire 51mm).

Today I charged my AWU and wore that on my other wrist. Did almost 4 miles of random run intervals using the trail run activity. Checked the HR on both very frequently, and it was always the same on both devices. If anything the epix had a little less lag than the AWU.

I've also done a hiking activity, and it seemed fine too.

Maybe you got a defective device?

Or maybe the new OHR sensor is more sensitive to skin types or something?

    Not sure.

  • I am experience the same.  I only found out because I  bought a 245 at a discount.  The 245 forerunner has a way more accurate heart rate sensor than my expensive epix!  tried indoor bike and outside running.   and the reading from epix optical heart rate sensor is super disappointing !

I even did a hrm pro plus test with both watch. ( one each wrist) at open track.

hrm pro plus with epix reading  against 245 optical heart rate sensor = 245 performs  almost dead on with the chest strap and epix readings

hrm pro plus with 245 against epix with optical heart rate sensor = epix performs badly,  lags terribly  in detecting heart rate going up, and also lags when heart rate going down.  at times in same effort, the reading is not even close to my 245+ chest strap ( 20+ beats difference

need a roll back function in firmware... or patch this bs

  • I've had my watch for over a year.  No issues last year while cycling.  I do believe there is a software issue as others are experiencing similar issues on other activities.   It just may not be affecting some, I don't know.  Glad yours is working well.

  • I agree.  Thanks for your feedback.

  • I am going to go out and try to get more data - I will use optical on the Epix Pro, Optical on the 965 and pair a 745 mounted to my handlebars to my HRM Pro Plus.

Because it is getting stuck low, I think its locking to cadence as its suspiciously close to ‘spinning up a hill’ cadence.,.
