Outdoor cycling heart rate issues

I need some help. I did my first outdoor ride of the year a month ago after riding indoors for the winter. My heart rate monitor wouldn't exceed 100 bpm. I rode yesterday and my heart rate ranged from 160 to 170. So all is good. Well, today I rode again and my heart rate, again, wouldn't go over 100 bpm. I stopped and switched from bike outdoors to bike indoors and my heart rate was back to the 160-170 range. Has anyone experienced this or have a solution? I don't use a chest monitor, if that is what you're wondering and I'm up to date on all updates.  Further, this was not an issue last summer.

  • I have the same issue with the cardio and hike activities since the last update, so I don't think it's outdoor cycling related. Outside of activities the heart rate is reporting correctly.

I've opened a ticket with support but not had a response yet.

  • Thank you for this.  If possible, please let me know the outcome.

  • This is a well known issue for the backcountry sky, hr would not go up, Garmin said hr calculation is related to the activity type in fact with mob i had no issue…

this is going on for over a year and I don’t think it was fixed with 13,22, so i am very upset

  • I've been on the phone with Garmin over the past two days.  The first suggested fix was to rest my bike activity.  Rode today and same issue.  Today we tried setting the device to not use smart activity, or some like that and set to every second.  The idea being that the first setting uses what you've been doing to monitor (I'm making this up as I go as I was more interested in having help in finding the setting).  By changing to every second, it's kept current.  If I have a chance today, I will see if it worked, at the latest it will be tomorrow.  I'll let you know.

  • Kareese - that didn't work, either.  Holding on line with Garmin for the next suggestion.

  • It is just so annoying, for backcountry ski the problem is there for over a year now, I have been also contacted directly by Garmin that we’re working on the problem but till now no success.

in addition to that with my Fenix 6pro I had no problems whatsoever to use it to broadcast the hr to the edge 830, now with Epix many times I experience same problem you mentioned above, hr does not exceed the 100 bpm.

also this is reported by other users on this forum..

just disappointing, I am considering the switch to an Apple Ultra even if all my adventures of many years are stored on Garmin ecosystem

  • I hear you and get the frustration.  Last night, it was decided to give me a free chest strap and they will continue to work internally on a solution.  I have mentioned that others, like yourself, are experiencing similar issues with other activities.  I had no issues at all last year and suspect that at least one of the multiple upgrades over the past year caused these issues.  I don't want to spend money on another option but fully understand why you might be interested in moving on.

  • I am getting very poor results from wrist HR but especially in cycling! I was going up a hill and it was a hard effort but HR was stubbornly below 100 BPM. My other Garmin paired to an HRM Pro Plus was over 50 BPM higher at the same point.

I do have an external HRM which is just as well as optical HR is unusable. This is with 13.22, 51mm Sapphire Pro

I will upload a FIT comparison if there is any interest

  • I'd speak to Garmin about this, same issue as my regular Epix.   The more people that report this directly, the better the chance of Garmin realizing this is not just a one off issue.

  • Here is a recent plot from a bike ride on Thursday - the HR when riding is abysmal.

Every time I go up a hill as you can see when the 965+HRM trace goes up as expected, the Epix Pro stays low. 965+HRMProPlus is in purple

It has got to be an error in the software as the Epix Pro has the latest sensor, but the results are just dire.
