Hiking Data Questions

I just purchased an Epix 2 and went on my first hike in the Hudson Highlands.  The hike was 10.55 miles long with an elevation gain of 3442 feet.  It took me a little over 7 hours to complete the hike.  I probably stopped for a total of 30 to 45 minutes to take pictures, drink water, eat a energy bar, etc.

My questions are:

Connect shows a total time of 7:10:37 with a moving time of of 3:59:31.  What speed threshold is considered moving because I was hiking at some speed for over 6 hours.

Steps were also undercounted because it showed only 14,329 steps for a 10.55 mile long hike.

Finally, is the a way to define 1 mile laps while hiking?

  • did you have auto-pause on or off? if it was on and your hike is steep it can pause your activity tracking as pause function works off gps speed (and going uphill despite having vertical speed may not reflect speed based on gps fix). Is your 3d speeed and distance on? If I am going up steep hills always make sure auto-pause is off - only ever use it if not fussed with distance.

Lap distance - yes its under activity menu.

    Menu - activities & apps - select hike - select auto-lap.

    Make sure on.

    mode should be auto-distance

auto-distance (select 1 mile - if using km as your distance units would need to put in 1.609km

Lap alert - (can only be done from watch) - but can set the fields you want to see.

[Can do it all from the watch - similar sequnce though slightly different if going through the activity, as have to sleect hike settings after selecting hike - otherwise the same]

  • Regarding the undercounting of the steps, were you using trekking poles? If so, that is likely why it undercounted. My son experienced the same thing on a 5 mile hike over the weekend with his 955. He used two poles, I used only one and with the opposite hand of which I wear my watch....he had 5,000 less steps than I did. We are about the same height.

  • Thanks.  This morning before leaving the area, I did a short but steep hike.  I turned on 3d speed and distance.  Connect showed 1:37:32 total time with 1:03:39 of moving time.  I was not stationary that long.  Anyway, thanks for your help because I believe that your recommendations made my hiking distance more accurate.  And, I enjoyed hearing and seeing my hiking times after each mile hiked.

  • Ha, Ha.  Yes I do.  It doesn't make sense to me but al least my step counts seem accurate when I am in walking mode.  Thanks.
