Expedition experiences

We are about to take a week or so long trip hiking and I am planning out some things with my watch and would like to hear any experiences and dos and don’ts that you guys may have come across.

i am specifically interested in the “expedition” activity as it looks interesting but not sure how it works in the real world. I would like to still track my heart rate so I’ll probably turn that on.

has anyone had success with “pausing” with the “resume later” functionality and taking their Watch off to charge every so often?

Anyone ever have their expedition activity crap out (and be stuck without navigation?) I’ll have a preloaded route on this trip

how long did the battery realistically last you?

is the epix suitable for this type of adventure? I’ll have a battery pack with me to charger every so often (it’s solar)

I am curious about your experiences, especially cold weather long backpacking trips because that will be later this year!

  • I've done several multi-day trips with my Epix and other watches but always with access to some charging. The most recent was a 6-day MTB tour riding 6 to 8 hrs daily. I charged the watch twice but could have probably got away with just once after day 3/4. I had the watch GPS set to Auto and made no other changes from my normal use so was pretty comfortable with the battery life.

Pausing with Resume Later will stop you tracking sleep etc and will also leave you with all your eggs in one basket. While you will end up with one file for the whole expedition you are at risk of losing all of it. Far better to save at the end of each day as individual activities and recharge as needed especially if you have a battery pack. There are online tools available where you can stitch the individual activities together.

I can't answer your question about Expedition Mode as I've not used it.
