Epix (and other models) leaving circular mark on wrist

I have an Epix and a Marq and both leave a circular mark on my wrist in the place where the HR sensor is located. While some people might believe I wear the watches too tight, this isn’t the case, as sometime they’re so loose they fall on the wrist close to the hand. I tried both fabric and silicone bands, all to no avail.

I also tried several other new-gen Garmin models, including the Fenix 7 and Forerunner 955 and the same circular mark shows up sooner or later. The only model that doesn’t leave the same mark is the Instinct 2 Solar which seems to have a different HR sensor design with no visible edges.

I’m a huge Garmin fan and would love to keep using my smartwatches, but this is driving me nuts. Does it happen to everyone else or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you!

  • The only model that doesn’t leave the same mark is the Instinct 2 Solar which seems to have a different HR sensor design with no visible edges.

The sensor on the Instinct 2 is still proud of the rest of the base and still leaves a mark on my wrist when I remove the watch just like the other watches you mention. It’s a function of the design to block out external light for the led to function better. Every user who wears the watch correctly will have the same mark. That indentation is also the reason why the watch needs to removed and cleaned, and the skin beneath cleaned and dried frequently to prevent skin issues.

  • Same problem here. I don't think it's OK for a watch like Marq 2. Soooo expensive and soo mean with my hands :( It this way, no wonder if in a few years Garmin will be like Nokia on smartwatches. Simply NOT OK! I love Marq 2 but I can not wear it. AW Ultra doesn't do that to my hands and it is very very accurate Disappointed

  • every 15 or 20 days i see a post like that. or a post like "altimeter is off" or my "gps not locked"

  • Epix is heavier than AW Ultra, only about 15g but it's 25% heavier than Apple Watch.  It has larger battery, and different case design. Most people buy Epix for that battery and ruggedness. MArq 2 is even heavier at 92G, so 50% more than AW Ultra!

You need good contact with skin to get accurate HR.

I suggest loosen the watch by a notch when you're not training, and tighten it up when you do. That's what I do.

Finally, if you prefer Apple Watch, then use Apple Watch! There are also other alternatives, like Forerunner 965 which is lighter than AW Ultra, Or Fenix7S and other 'S' watches.

Most people who are not trail-runners or ultra-runners, like T5Krunner or DC rainmaker prefer Forerunner for this exact reason.

Different sizes and weights for different use cases; obviously bigger watch with larger battery will be heavier, which may not be the best option for you.

  • looking at your picture and where your sensor mark is I don't think you have it placed in the best position either, looks as though its almost riding your wrist bone and could be the reason why maybe its fit isn't the greatest.

Would suggest wearing it more central on your wrist so the OHR sensor is between your wrist bones not on them - also the front edge of the underside strap should be at least 2 finger widths from the base of your palm - this is  again to ensure that your sensor sits between the wrist bones and not on them.

While it will still leave a mark as your skin/'flesh is thicker in the suggested area it shouldn't be as definied and should also be more comfortable to wear. During the day I wear mine just tight enough so that can still pull away from the skin, and watch can occassionally shift if I move my arms vigoursly. When I go tracking I will marginally tighten - should just about be able to lift from the skin, watch should be just tight enough not to shift while performing activity. When swimming - absolutely get a mark like that as need to ratchet it down tightlely enough so cannot pull off skin.

  • Wait what.. Is this serious?

Different case, but I used a headband while working out the other day, and when I took it of it had left a mark right across my forehead. Didn't think much about it at the time, but after reading this I guess there might be something more to it. Should I be worried? See a doctor maybe? Sue someone? Please help!

  • I used an Apple headband the other day and it didn’t leave any mark.

  • Probably my skin is special but i don't see any evident mark from the sensor while wearing the watch normally...and it can't slide.

When i workout, i tighten it by 1 hole and yes, i can see a more evident mark after 1-2 hours of wearing but it's something that disappears after a while(never checked in details).

  • We are sorry to hear about the issue you are reporting. The skin irritation may be a result of build-up on the watch band and/or casing. You should discontinue wearing your watch until your skin has healed.
