Barely suggesting rest days

I've been doing/following Daily Training Suggestions for a full 4 weeks now and this week (4th week) I've noticed that the watch is barely suggesting rest days. My last rest day was sunday. Followed up by a full 6-day running streak. 4 Base Runs, 1 Long Run, 1 Tempo Run. Tomorrow is another Base Run planned and the preview for the upcoming week shows no rest days.

I know that Garmin can changed the rest days based upon bad sleep etc. and show a rest day tomorrow instead of the planned run. But still a bit odd, isn't it? What do you guys think?

  • Rest days are suggested only if you're getting near the edge of the ideal interval or if you had a really intensive sessions(even in this case you could get a "recovery" run instead of rest).

Base runs are not considered intensive activities so it makes sense to not have any rest day if you're within the optimal load interval.

This is considering that you sleep well, HRV is within optimal range, etc...if one of those get bad then you have more chances to get a rest day.

  • Makes sense. I'm feeling pretty good, Base runs still feeling easy and as you say my HRV is still within optimal range. Sleep on average for last 7 days was 8h 5m. Seems like everything is fine Slight smile

I guess I'm mostly worried about joints and tendons.

  • Take a day off, workouts will adjust.

  • I agree the recommendations (or lack of) are off. A couple of days back, after three hours of mountain biking, my recovery period was about 48 hours. Sure enough, the next morning, with it still in the 30s, Garmin was recommending another workout. Seems like a disconnect somewhere. And yeah, in the past there were rest days.

  • Recovery time is not the same as rest. While it might take 48 hours to fully recover from the workout, that does not mean there should not be another workout in that time.

  • A few weeks ago DSW had me on a 12 day streak with lots of easy runs with one workout and a long run sandwiched in between. I have it on suggestions based on heart rate and I follow the program as prescribed. Worked out great. No excessive fatigue.

  • It happened to me too after several weeks of PRODUCTIVE training following the suggestions, and that is how it is expected to work.

As you follow the suggestions and your stats are on an improvement trend and the other params are fine (balanced HRV, good sleep quality etc.) the device concludes that increasing your training load would be beneficial for your fitness, hence the result.

I believe that it would help a lot if Garmin adds the possibility to set training week days in the suggestions algoritm (e.g. I can only work out on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays) - just like you can set your long run days - and the entire load calculation and training suggestions to be based on the defined schedule. Because this doesn't exist I had no option but to quit following suggestions and set up a fixed schedule training plan.
