Epix G2 Altimeter way off

This week I experienced weird data output from the altimeter. First I notice it while skiing and on another day while biking. Altitude is off even while standing still. Pictures and video attached are showing the data output that is oscillating and not accurate: Bike activity on my Epix is showing speed at more that 1000km/h and 20KM ascent. I did a watch resent and still the problem persist this morning as my altitude is below see level as shown on one of the attaches picture.

I’m out of option here. Any ideas? I’ll try to set the satellite to GPS only.

  • I am sorry there is an issue. If your barometric altimeter readings are consistently significantly off, your altimeter sensor might have failed.

Try calibrating your altimeter prior to multiple Outdoor activities in an effort to receive the best readings. If your altimeter metrics are still wildly off, it will help you confirm the sensor failing.

    - You can also soak your watch in luke warm water for 5-10 minutes to see if it helps. (Please do not add anything into the water or residue will be left behind inside the port.)

    - Wear and Care Tips

    - There is also an elevation correction feature on your Connect web account: What Is the Elevation Corrections Feature in Garmin Connect?

    - If despite calibrating prior to an outdoor activity and soaking your watch has not resolved your issue, please reach out to Outdoor Product Support in your region.

  • I had the same thing happen to me yesterday on a bike ride and after a few feet my EPIX 2 said I had gone 7 miles and was averaging 500 miles per hour.  Looking at the data it has the distance and time recorded correctly, but it shows my elevation as dropping from 217 feet to -1640 feet and staying there.  Does that mean my altitude sensor has failed?

  • If you have done all the troubleshooting noted above and after testing further you repeatedly have the same issue when you record outdoor activities, then it would be a strong likelihood. It is the pattern that helps you make the determination. One-off events if seldom, can be windy days or your clothes interfering with your barometric altimeter port.

  • I did the troubleshooting and just did a walk just now of less than 4 minutes where it reported I covered 43.8 miles at an average speed of 708mph. Looking at the detailed data in the FIT file it shows my elevation as mostly being -1640ft but once it jumped to 45390 feet and then 65617 feet before dropping back to -1640.

  • Chris,

after several attempts to recalibrate the altimeter and testing it on the field, it doesn’t show the correct altitude and speed.

the watch is less than a year old, is it still under warranty? If so, what are the procedures to have it repaired/exchanged?

    Thanks

Yes. Please reach out to Outdoor Product Support in your region. I am sorry you continue to have issues with your watch.

  • Two weeks ago I bought an Epix Gen 2 47MM Pro Sapphire watch at a REI store in California.

Altimeter came broken out of the box. Have tried calibrating and re-calibrating using GPS, DEM and Manual calibration.  While calibration actually goes, the next second the altimeter starts fluctuating anywhere from -7000Meters (yes, negative 7000 meters) up until +8000 meters. I live in front of the beach at sea level.  While doing an activity like running or cycling, garmin records totally wrong numbers while strava gets correct numberd. I did a trail half marathon this weekend and garmin recorded over 6000m in total climb when the actual number was 1025m, which strava got spot on.

Have been exchanging emails with garmin (since I’m out of the country) and they have been so slow to respond, one e-mail every couple of days, asking for all the information/proof (proof of purchase, video recordings showing these missreadings, etc) which I have already sent and have not heard back. If they don’t come through with a good solution this will by my last garmin purchase. Have had forerunner, fenix 5, fenix 6 and actually have garmin navigation on my fishing boat ‍
