I can't add watch faces/apps with 11.28 firmware (8.45 Host) - Connect IQ says I need to update my watch

Connect IQ is not allowing me to add many watch faces and apps to my Epix 2.  It keeps saying that I need  to update my watch (with Garmin Express, of all things), but my watch is already running the 11.28 firmware and there are no updates available.

Is the issue that my "Host" version and main firmware version are out of sync?  My watch's Host version is 8.45.  I've seen some people mention that in relation to this type of problem.

I have turned off and restarted my watch already, as that was also mentioned by in another post (though the link to the support site he provided now shows a 404).

  • You need to install the 11.28 software:

MENU > System > Software Update > Install Now

    HTH

  • Thanks, but that's not an option. The watch, Garmin Express, and Garmin Connect all claim there are no updates to apply.

  • Time to call Garmin Support and have them talk you through a fix.

    HTH

  • Please try the following:

    - Hard reset your watch by holding down your top left button until your watch shuts off then let go of the button.

    - On a computer, add a Connect IQ watch face when you are signed into your Garmin account on the Connect IQ site and download it through Garmin Express.

Connect IQ will only give the software update message when there is information crossed on the backend so Connect IQ is refusing the download until your watch is seen as on v11.28 on our side.

If you continue to have the issue, give it half a day or try again tomorrow on the off chance your issue is directly related to any updating we are doing on our end.

  • When you say hard "reset" do you mean restart/reboot? Or do you mean wiping the watch and starting over/restoring?

Also, this has been going on for a week+, though I didn't restart the watch until 2 days ago. It had no impact, if course.

  • The hard reset I described will shut your watch off but it is not the same equivalent of selecting to power off your watch in the control shortcut menu. The hard reset process does not clear or change your settings.

Your most likely solution are the additional steps given. Until our backend sees your watch as fully updated to v11.28, the Connect IQ APP will not let you sync anything to your watch.

  • Ok, I'll go through your listed steps. Thanks.

  • Your additional steps don't jive with what's happening. Long pressing the top left button long enough does get the watch to turn off, but only for a minute. Then it came back on by itself (having lost 500 steps that never got synced, I suppose). I repeated this 2 more times - it won't stay off.

I logged into Connect IQ and tried to add a watch face, but it, of course, said that my watch had to be updated first.

Then the Garmin Express part of your instructions don't mean much at that point. It still finds no updates, apart from the battery widget.

Garmin Express does say "You're up to date!" and follows that up 2 lines later saying "Version: 8.45".

  • I can see something on our end that would explain your issue. I am sending you a direct message to work with you further.

  • For those finding this on Google; Chris did come up with a solution for me that worked. Ask him for help, maybe, if the other methods don't work for you.
