Epix 2 (11.28) constantly goes into sleep mode

Some days my Epix 2 activates sleep mode non-stop without my intervention. This happens even when I am walking or cycling. So not only when sitting quietly at the computer or on the sofa. However, the Epix 2 still continues to count steps diligently. One might even wonder how one can sleep and exercise at the same time....
It seems almost as if the clock gets out of rhythm and then constantly activates the sleep mode.
Restarting the watch doesn't really help either. On the contrary, after a restart, the watch immediately goes back into sleep mode. At some point, the phenomenon disappears again for a few days and then suddenly reappears...

Since I use the watch (in addition to its main function of displaying the time) mainly for recording steps and workouts, sleep tracking is actually not important to me. But unfortunately, as far as I know, this can not be switched off completely, which would actually be my preference. This misbehavior makes an otherwise great watch pretty worthless.

In the forum I have read that other users are struggling with similar or the same issues. Does anyone know more about this issue and especially whether there is improvement in sight here?

  • epix2 11.28
I am in the same situation.
I turn off sleep mode from the control menu and it immediately activates.

I forgot to put my smartwatch on before going to bed so I entered the sleep time manually. It broke after that.

    DEEPL translation

  • Not sure what can cause this issue, but the closest you can get to disabling Sleep Mode is changing the following settings in Menu - System - Sleep Mode:

    - Do not disturb = "Off"

    - Watch Face = "Don't change"

    - Battery saver = "Off"

    Then in

Menu - System - Touch - During Sleep, set your preference.

Menu - System - Display - During Sleep, set your preference.

It will still enter Sleep Mode but you should not feel the difference.

It happens to me often that watch detects sleep when not sleeping and replace my night’s sleep. This is a known issue but since not reported by enough people they does think that it does not affect a large number of users and thus have a low priority for being solved.

Since I use the watch (in addition to its main function of displaying the time) mainly for recording steps and workouts, sleep tracking is actually not important to me

You may think that the sleep tracking is not so important for you but did you know that the sleep tracking has an impact on the training readiness, the recovery time, and Daily suggestion.

The watch and only keep track of one sleep a day. If you take a nap or the watch start to register a sleep when not sleeping which happens then it may replace your better night’s sleep and you will get a very low training readiness which will change (increase) your remaining recovery time as well as change your daily suggestion. Garmin says that a sleep less than 3 hours which I think they define as a nap should not replace your night’s sleep but we have seen it happen and you can find the thread discussing the issue here https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-7-series/325065/night-sleep-data-gets-replaced-by-daytime-sleep

Chris had informed me that there are only a few that has this issue since he had not got so many direct messages saying this is a problem. Thus if you do not send Chris a direct message as he asked in the thread if got this issue then solving it will have a very low priority since they believe not many people have this issue. To summarize if you want something to happen you must take action an report it otherwise it will be unsolved.

  • For me, the sleep mode has never worked correctly, no matter what firmware I used! It's just a madness that Garmin does not get that under control. Work there only bunglers??? Why do I even have to enter a time window when I go to sleep??? I am a train driver and have completely irregular times when I work and sleep. Before I bought the Epix2, I had a Huawei GT2 and I didn't have to enter any times when I went to sleep and it recognized perfectly when I slept and even when I just took a nap! But with a 1000€ watch this does not work. Well, at least the rest works, but I would not buy this watch again and recommend someone also not, on the contrary I advise against it!

  • Yeah same problems here. Still many bugs plus some hardware errors (screen flickers in dim) and still the developers not fixing many of them. Yesterday again my Epix goes in sleep mode without reason. No one listen for our problems and if they listen they reply when they want. Even if i'm hardcore Garmin fan i don't think in the future i will still continue to buy Garmin products and i already spent a ton of money.

I have the exact feeling and I will probably also vote with my feet and look elsewhere when it is time to replace my Epix unless I see som big improvement on the SW quality

Have you reported the issue by send Chris a private message. The more people reporting the issue the higher priority it hopefully gets

I have been told that it might be a HW issue instead of a SW issue since so few have reported the issue and that I maybe should contact Garmin for replacement. But I had false sleep detections also with my Fenix 6 and my Epix 2 works perfectly fine when recording my night’s sleep. Thus I believe it is a SW not HW issue but maybe that is what everyone should do that have this issue. Ask for a replacement and then Garmin might be aware of the issue due to high replacement costs and actually fix the problem

Improving the sleep detection algorithm to minimize false sleep detection would be nice. However, the BIGGEST issue as stated by the title in this thread is that fake sleep or any naps for that part replaces the better night’s sleep.

  • Well that's the problem here. You already solve it without need my answer. Garmin expect from us to solve problems and bugs and not from their employers. The funny thing as i say before is i always support Garmin products and trust me here in Greece my reviews affects a lot of buyers. I don't care anymore about even post a bug here. They release the product we pay in January 2022 and still the device has bugs which affects user experience. they don't respect our money and they even delete posts here when we post something that they don't like.

  • Same issue here. Epix gen2 goes to sleep mode after restart and any activity.

  • If you're on 11.28 the same as the OP then perhaps you should update your software and see if the problem persists. if you are on a different version then perhaps a new thread should be started.

  • This was driving me insane, what worked for me is the 'Sleep Schedule' was set from 9:15pm to 6:15PM, so I had a three hour window.

To verify if this is what's going on with you also:

    • Hold left middle button of the watch, scroll to the bottom select 'System'
    • Next menu, scroll down to 'Sleep Mode'
    • Next Menu, 'Schedule'
    • Verify the time is correct for each day
      • I set mine from 9:15PM to 6:15AM
        • Changing the time is 5 minute intervals, it sucks if this is what you run into
      • Accept the changes
      • Set it for every day, or repeat if you want a different schedule for each day
      • Back out of the menus (bottom right button, like five times)
