Sleep mode not working properly within schedule since 11.28

Dear Garmin,

what have you done to the sleep mode? I have been using the Epix daily since back in April. Out of the box, it recognized perfectly when I went to bed and when I woke up. I set my sleep schedule fom 23:00 to 7:30: if I went to bed at 1:00 it would not say that I went to bed at 23:00 but at 1:00. And the same goes for waking up.

Since 11.28 it is just f*cked:

24.02.2023

I went to bed at around 01:40 and not at 23:00.

23.02.2023

Again, not in bed at 23:00 and didn't wake up at 8:30

22.02.2023

Correct! And before the update.....which you guessed it, I did the evening of the 22.02.2023

21.02.2023

Again, correct!

So dear Garmin, what do you need to solve this?

  • yeah... I have noticed the same. Now several times the Watch has extended the sleep after I woke up and used the morning report.

This is new with the 11.28.

NB: I am running a comparison and monitoring how often the watch detect sleep too early or wake up too late. I will run this for a couple of weeks and report back.

I mean it was already fu$#ed up like for last 7 updates. Dont remember exactly but I was describing/reporting this bug like a 5 months ago (but then I gave up on Garmin seeing they do nothing with those reports at all). I mean the bug earlier was different a bit but it always is about am/pm vs 24hr time setting and sleep settings. For me it was just trying to measure sleep duuring the day and back then I found out it switched 23:00 for 11am not 11pm for itself (dont ask me why). It can be a diffrence between setting sleep time in your watch and in your app at least it looks so. But as I said I gave up on garmin. They dont pay me and I wont spent hours trying to track obvious bugs. Probably they just save money on beta testers and use community for thaty pourpose.

  • I can't really confirm what you found there. For me, the times when I go to bed and get up are still recognised quite well. I also didn't go to bed until around 1 a.m. last weekend, and this was correctly detected.

With the sleep schedule times, I had understood that these are used to switch the clock to night mode and back. It is also indicated or described somewhere that the night mode has nothing to do with sleep recognition per se.

I have also had it in the past where I was watching TV late at night, completely relaxed on the sofa, and it was already recognised as "sleep". But that was before the update.

What I have not understood so far: Is the night mode of the watch somehow triggered by the sleep detection or not?

  • I agree with you - but unfortunately since the update it says that I'm going to bed at 23:00 pm. Before the update it worked as intended - at 23:00 pm it activates the sleep mode watch face and that's it. I also see how relaxing on the sofa might lead to the watch to think you are sleeping - but not when you are standing and walking around

I started to do a few tests and will keep doing them for the next week or so.

  • Is the night mode of the watch somehow triggered by the sleep detection or not

Unless there has been a change with the latest firmware, sleep mode is not triggered by sleep detection. Only by schedule or manually.

About something related, but the other way, before the latest firmware, there was supposedly a time window bracketing the sleep mode schedule when the sleep detection was heightened. I never saw any difference by shifting my sleep mode start time earlier or later to avoid sleep detection while  watching TV or during the day.

  • With the sleep schedule times, I had understood that these are used to switch the clock to night mode and back

Garmin support has told me that watch starts to monitor sleep detection more closely 2 hours ahead of when sleep window starts. Also the end of sleep window is used to determine when to show morning report; one hour before sleep window ends

  • For me, the sleep mode has never worked correctly, no matter what firmware I used! It's just a madness that Garmin does not get that under control. Work there only bunglers??? Why do I even have to enter a time window when I go to sleep??? I am a train driver and have completely irregular times when I work and sleep. Before I bought the Epix2, I had a Huawei GT2 and I didn't have to enter any times when I went to sleep and it recognized perfectly when I slept and even when I just took a nap! But with a 1000€ watch this does not work. Well, at least the rest works, but I would not buy this watch again and recommend someone also not, on the contrary I advise against it!
