Feature Request: Music Player, Shortcut for volume control

Is there a way to quickly access the volume control of the music player?
At the moment, I first have to call up the submenu in the player, then select volume control and only then I have the option of turning the volume up and down. That's a little bit to much clicking.

Many Bluetooth Earbuds no longer have their own volume control, so I need to adjust it on the external player.

When I'm on the road, I often want to quickly turn the volume down or up. Today, this is a bit awkward and not possible without looking at the clock.

What do you think?

  • That is what i am looking for also ??

  • Yeah, I have a 955 and it has the same problem (I think every Garmin watch does). I really wish there was a volume control widget that could be accessed via hotkey (so you could use it without looking) or the controls menu, especially since volume is also relevant for things other than music (like alerts).

    It would also be nice if the spotify player supported optional touch gestures (like VLC and other desktop/mobile players.) e.g. swipe up or down on the “now playing” screen to adjust the volume, swipe left or right to skip / play previous track.

    I realize that the player is designed so that it can be used without touch, but there’s all kinds of useful optional touch functionality that could be added if only they cared about usability. (Guess I could say the same about earbud manufacturers that either ditched the volume controls completely, or force you to choose between volume control and some other function, like toggling noise cancellation.)

  • I would absolutely love to see this as well. Honestly Garmin could take a more nuanced approach using the hardware buttons imo...

    - Use a hotkey to access music controls, then

    - Single press start button > play/pause

    - Double press start button > next track

    - Single press up button > volume up

    - Single press down button > volume down

    - Double press up button > more controls

    - Double press down button > last track

  • Adding +1 to this request. There's five buttons on the epix and a touch screen. Would love to see less button clicks to adjust volume.

  • The problem is that all of the buttons are already reserved by the system:

    LIGHT = turn on light
    UP = scroll up / move cursor up
    DOWN = scroll down / move cursor down
    BACK/LAP = go back / take lap
    START = activate current selection

    There's no room for extra "action buttons" other than START, if we're talking about short single presses. Long presses are also already taken:

    Hold LIGHT = controls menu
    Hold UP = context-sensitive menu / settings
    Hold DOWN = music / user-defined hotkey
    Hold START = used-defined hotkey
    Hold BACK = return to watchface (on some models) / user-defined hotkey

    Allowing for double presses would have the effect of making things more confusing (and delaying the normal response for single press actions). Yes, Garmin has the double-click LIGHT shortcut for the flashlight, but notice that the single-press LIGHT action is already triggered as you're double clicking. The same wouldn't be feasible for the UP and DOWN buttons in the music controls, as you wouldn't want to pause your track in the process of changing the volume. So the only recourse would be for Garmin to significantly delay the response to the single action.

    Plus, I don't think double-clicking a button is something that's easy to do while you're running (or doing other exercise), as opposed to sitting at your desk and clicking at a mouse. There's a reason that touchscreen UIs (for example) don't employ the double-click paradigm.

    I think the best thing they could do is allow for optional touch functionality, like having on-screen buttons on the main music player screen that only work with touch. Their use would be purely optional ofc, as they'd always have to support button-only usage.

    I'm envisioning sort of a mix between the music player UI for "optional touch watches" (watches with 5 buttons, where turning off touch completely is an option) and "mandatory touch watches" (watches like Vivoactive and Venu where you can't fully use the watch without touch). I doubt think they will do that as Garmin seems to not like having buttons in the music player that only work with touch (this is somewhat understandable, as it could lead to confusion). What they could do is only show those touch buttons if touch is enabled.

    But if I had my way, I would add the following optional touch-only buttons to the UI:

    - previous track
    - next track
    - open volume controls

    I do think the existing UI is pretty bad. For example, when you open the secondary controls screen (with the previous track button), you can no longer see the name of the currently playing track, which kinda sucks when you're trying skip backwards through several tracks.
