Hi,
I recently did a cross-country skiing activity (classic skiing) for a distance of 20 miles (31km). During that whole time, I am obviously swinging my arms to pole during the entire skiing activity. However, at the end of the day, my watch reported only 7400 steps for the whole day. Normally for hiking, I would only need between 6-7 miles to get to over 10,000 steps, so for a 20 mile ski, this seems very low. For all my other Nordic skiing activities last week (15 of them), step count seemed equally low given the distance for both classic and skate skiing.
I only wear my watch for activities, not at other times. So I know it was not counting steps outside of my skiing activity. How exactly are steps calculated? I guess I am assuming that the accelerometer is measuring my arm motion to calculate a step, but I'm sure there are nuances I know nothing about.
Does this behavior seem correct, or is there maybe a problem with how steps are calculated during Nordic skiing?
