I dont track all workouts, are my stats/recommendations suffering?

TLDR: my watch thinks I’m super stressed out but really I’m just working out and not tracking it, am I messing up my stats?

I lift weights 5x per week, but do not track that type of exercise on my watch. I do track cardio workouts such a swimming, biking, or running. Will my stats/recommendations like HR/stress/recommended recovery/training readiness/whatever be wrong/different if I don’t track the lifting workouts? It’s a hassle to track lifting so I would rather not.

Thanks all!

  • Shortest answer possible is - Yes and No but to a such small degree there is no reason to use your watch any differently than how you use it now.

  • Absolutely yes, depending on your heart rate level for strength (it will heavily affect things if you're getting much above zone 1 for heart rate for any extended period).  That's going to significantly affect your training status and other things as discussed in the running science stuff: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/garmin-technology/running-science/physiological-measurements/making-the-most-of-training-load-focus/

Easiest way to track the lifting stuff is to just start a strength activity and then stop and save it when you're done, no set-tracking required (although it can be nice).

  • Stress tracking is not affected by workouts recording.

When you move a lot, the stress is not recorded as you are much active than what is needed to get acceptable data.

It's normal that body's stress is high after intense activities and it can last also for several hours with or without a recorded activity.

Or if you want to say it in different way, recording an activity will not make your stress lower after the activity.

Not recording activities will make your training load lower and how it can affect the suggestions is based on how intense is the activity itself.

    edit.

As KrapfenKringel pointed out, after an intense activity recorded, the stress level measurement is disabled for a while also if you're just sitting so that can be one of the reasons to record all workouts.

  • Is the hassle to operate the watch in the activity, or just in wearing it?

You could just start a cardio activity just to record the pulse...

  • Depends on which stress factor the OP is referring to.  I agree with you that if they are referring to health stress.

But may be referring to training stauts and getting strained status in which case 9640767 is absolutely correct in their statement.

Either way I do believe it is better to record it, cause if health stress then at least get a workout icon so know the reason for not recording and if post activity high stress levels gives a great indicator reason for that increased stress level. If re training stauts - well its obvious. So abosolutely would record whether using free strength option (which would be best for OP) or even using cardio (but makes more sense re free strength option and just turn off rep counting & auto sets and edit reps and weights. [If OP sometimes like to rep count and other times don't have two strenght apps to make it quick and easy to select  rep count one or select no rep count one.]

  • Stress tracking is not affected by workouts recording.

It is, because after a workout the watch disables stress tracking for a short recovery window. So recording will result in a lower stress reading for the day compared to not doing it.

  • That's also true but i get it only after intensive runs...never after other type of "easier" activities and with easier i mean from the HR point of view.

But yeah, definitely a good point that i forgot Slight smile
