Auto Save Breathwork Tranquility Activity

Hi there!

So one of my favorite things I used to do with my Vivoactive 4 was to start a breathwork tranquility activity as I was about to go to sleep. The 4-7-8 breathing pattern knocks me out like a light.

On the VA4, the activity could complete and then eventually auto save itself. Whereas on my Garmin Epix 2, it just sits there on the completion screen and then I wake up to it and minus 10% battery life. It also prevents any sleep tracking as the watch is just sitting there waiting for the activity to be marked as saved or discarded. Is there a way I can configure that activity / the watch to auto save workouts on completion after a specific timeout?

Would be awesome just to be able to fall asleep to a breathwork activity.

  • no - the epix doesn't have any auto-start or auto save functionality. Its designed to be able to be paused for long periods.

  • What I do, is the following:

    - use the stress glance,

    - when the glance is open, press the start button. The watch will prompt you to start a breathwork process to "calm you down". It doesn't create an activity, it will just run its course. You cannot customize the breathing pattern. You have haptic feedback when to breath in or out, and it is relatively easy to follow without stressing out :-)

  • Interesting... I tried using the stress glance on my Epix 2, and it looks like it tries to create an activity and sits on the save screen at the end of the breath work.

When I use the stress glance on my Garmin Instinct it does auto save. I think @jaamgans is right, there might not be any auto save functionality and the Epix 2 is designed to be paused for long periods.

  • the Epix 2 is designed to be paused for long periods.

Generally if you Stop an activity (= pausing effectively) it will timeout and autosave after a period of time 25 mins I believe, unless you select Resume Later from the Save screen.

Unsure why this is not working with Breathwork. I’ve just tried this with the Breathwork activity on my Marq Athlete Gen 2 and that autosaved after 25 mins. Maybe it’s an issue with the Epix Gen 2?

  • Same on the Fenix 7x solar, breathwork sends me to sleep than robs me of battery as it doesn’t auto save

  • Report the problem to Garmin Support.

You are right. I tried to start a breathwork activity and have it time out (power save) at the end, but it stayed on the save/discard menu at the end of activity. I don't know if I was mistaken or some change happened.

It did auto-save after about 25mn. I tried last night but cut short because the watch was not in sleep/DnD mode. I will try again tonight with Sleep mode on.

  • I'm having the same issue and concern on the Instinct 2.

I have been using the stress glance as a workaround, as mentioned by @Etupes25, but it appears Garmin removed this functionality in software version 11.12. The glance is now redirecting to "Press GPS to perform breathwork activity."

I will try turning on Max Battery power mode, but it only brings estimated battery from 50 to 69 hours.

Wish there was a solution since the breathwork does help me get to sleep well. Last night, my watch woke me vibrating at 2am as it ran it ran out of battery while stuck on the breathwork activity, and I couldn't get back to sleep after that point.

  • it appears Garmin removed this functionality in software version 11.12

    I suspect the same.

I am pretty sure that in the past, it was possible to start the breathwork activity from the stress glance, to not hear any beep when the activity started or finished, and to not worry about saving the activity. In fact, i don't really about about saving the activity.

It seems that when the watch is in sleep mode with DND on, no beep should he heard anyway.

So, is it a bug or is it the way it should be?

  • Hmm, not sure. I presume you have Alert Tones enabled in your settings. I have those turned off, so I don't run into a problem there. The problem I run into is only around draining the battery (vibrating when battery ran out last night) and preventing sleep/HRV from being captured.

I reviewed apps in the app store. The Timer Widget could somewhat replace the stress glance functionality, since it both repeats and eventually stops on its own. But it times out in 2 minutes (the standard timeout for glances on Instinct 2), unlike the stress glance which could run for 5 minutes: Connect IQ Store | Free Watch Faces and Apps | Garmin

I'm right there with you, there is no benefit to Garmin having it ask to save the activity. Most people will likely not track breathwork, or it they do, they likely won't be concerned to have it autosave to capture the activity.
