2 week old Epix 2 wont turn on

I have had my Epix 2 for 2 weeks now and it turned off before the battery died (15% remaining) and now it wont turn on.

i tried holding the power button (light) for more that 20 seconds. I tried the same while plugged into the charger. I left it on charge overnight and still the same problem. $1000 paperweight. I am a long time garmin fenix user and have had multiple generations. I love this watch, but this is not usable.

I have contacted support and i am waiting for a response. Anyone have any suggestions on other things I can try before i am forced to return it?

  • I doubt its a general issue with the watch itself. Might be that yours is faulty, in that case you can probably return it under warranty. Also, what version are you running? Live or Beta / Alpha?

What you could try before that is to plug it into PC via the USB and see if something happens then if you have Garmin Express installed on it. Maybe it triggers something?

I also think that in Alpha / Beta forums are some instructions on how to handle Watch Freeze and things like that - might come handy in your case.

  • Thanks David, I am running factory software. I have tried plugging it in to a PC with Garmin Express running, but it did not pick anything up. The watch was working perfectly fine and then all of a sudden turned off. I will check the beta forums to try and get some ideas.

  • Did you try these different resets?

    Clear user data

    Start with watch powered off.
    Press and continue hold Back.
    Press and release Power.
Release Back once Clear user data? message appears.
    Select Yes.

    Factory reset:

Ensure the watch is powered off.
Press and continue to hold down the Start and Back buttons.
Press and hold Power until the Garmin logo appears.
After the first beep release the Start button
After the second beep release the remaining buttons.

  • I am sorry for the bad luck with your new watch. If you did not buy your watch directly from us, please do not hesitate to reach out to the vendor you bought your watch from and initiate your exchange. Based on the timeline you have provided, it will be much quicker to return and exchange your Epix 2 with the vendor. If you bought it from us directly, if you emailed us through our Support Center, Outdoor Product Support should respond to you reasonably soon to exchange your watch if bought through us directly. My sincere apologies for the bad new watch. It can happen but is incredibly rare.

Here is the Support Center article for your issue: (Confirming you have already tried the hard reset step that might sometimes work.)

Garmin Watch Freezes, Reboots, or Will Not Power On

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I spoke with a support rep and they suspect my watch had a seal failure and is water damaged. They have initiated the warrantee process.

For the record it was dead as dead can be, no screen activity, no sound, no vibration. Along with the support rep, we tried all combinations of PC USB, wall wart, power on with charger plugged in, power on without charger and there was nothing. I also own other Garmin watches and I used those to validate the charging cables.

My watch was submerged for < 30 seconds in < 6" of water (changing the filter in my SPA, water temperature was 90 deg F), and it died an hour or two after that event.

Ironically, I bought this watch because I lost my Fenix 5X. I found it 2 weeks later in my SPA(the clasp broke) & it works perfectly fine and I am now using it as my backup while Garmin replaces my Epix

  • The good is that you found your 5X !!!

  • Thanks for sharing it. Unfortunately, this will continue to discourage me to go into the water with my smartwatch. :D I already posted few weeks ago about it and how I am not confident into going into water with my Epix2. But not only Epix2, I owned several 'waterproof' smartwatches that should sustain water, but never felt at ease to submerge some electronic device into water.

I am happy that you will get your replacement though Slight smile

  • FWIW I swim 3 or 4 times a week with mine, and have been doing so since Garmin have been selling watches that can be used in the water - 310XT I believe. I have yet to have any problems with water ingress.

continue to discourage me to go into the water with my smartwatch.

There's smartwatches and there's smartwatches but Garmin sells sport watches designed to be used in the water as much as on the land.

  • They literally engrave "100m" into the case, if that doesn't give you confidence for swimming I don't know what would. OP is getting a replacement due to water damage, Garmin are clearly not questioning it as demonstrated here by Chris. Several of my Garmin watches have been to...quite deep...without any issues at all. DCRainmaker tests them in his tank. You really shouldn't worry about the Epix in water, if you survive the watch definitely will

  • Thanks. I am not doubting Garmin at all here -> I am worried for any kind of electronic device in that matter. But it is something that I should definetly overpass and get used to, for sure :)
