Activity to use for calisthenics

Anyone have any suggestions on what activity profile they use for calisthenics training?

  • I select Strength, since Calisthenics in essence is basically strength / endurance exercises, just using the bodyweight instead of dumbbells. Probably you will also have in your routine some HIIT sessions, so on those days I would use HIIT. Not sure if there is something more percise for it.

  • If you have a routine, you can also rebuild your workout in GC. I guess not all exercises might be available, but it's worth checking out.

  • Do you think Garmin will ever consider adding us the option to create custom exercise? Even if only available locally? I am able to determine which muscle groups the exercise would target, and I think that is the only thing Garmin would need to know I believe.

It does not matter at all what exercise you select, so just pick whatever you want. The muscle group is used for nothing else than the graphics on the activity screen in Garmin Connect - and that's just for your review. There is no internal calculation using individual muscle groups, and no algorithms working with individual muscles.

Custom exercises are being asked for since years, but due to the system Garmin uses, it would not be easy to implement them, without rewriting their software on all devices, and apps, hence I am rather skeptical about Garmin implementing it any soon. Request it at Share Ideas | Garmin though anyway - the more people ask for it there, the higher probability Garmin starts considering it.

  • Ah, too bad that they do not do any internal calculations in regards to targeted muscle groups. I think the next iteration would be (for Strength users) that Garmin would record the targeted muscle groups and notice that if you target the same muscle groups in consecutive days issue a warning that maybe those muscle groups should be in recovery, or something similar, to maximize results.

    Thanks for the tip though.
