Screen of Epix 2 in AOD can't get activated by wrist raising

In order to save the battery i prefer the AOD mode, so I expect the display is totally black when the wrist hasnt been raised. But when i raise up my wrist the display won't light up, in this situation I need to tap the screen first to activate. How can I get a modus in which wrist raising activates the screen, and the screen is totally black in waist down situation?

btw... i have the latest software version.

  • i need to correct myself

Obviously I mean "Display off modus"

  • Sounds like you're using "Display Off". What you want is "Wrist Gesture".

Could you check the controls menu and find out if you toggled that?

Then activate "Wrist Gesture" in the Screen Settings.

    Changing the Screen Settings

    1. Hold MENU.
    2. Select System > Display.
    3. Select an option:
      • Select During Activity.

      • Select General Use.

      • Select During Sleep.

    4. Select an option:
      • Select Always On Display to keep the watch face data visible and turn down the background. This option impacts the battery and display life (About the AMOLED Display).

      • Select Brightness to set the brightness level of the screen.

      • Select Alerts to turn on the screen for alerts.

      • Select Wrist Gesture to turn on the screen by raising and turning your arm to look at your wrist.

      • Select Timeout to set the length of time before the screen turns off.

There is a contradiction here. If you use Always On Display, the screen will not get totally black, but dimmed. If you take out the watch, the screen will turn off completely. I think Garmin keeps it always dimmed if you are recording a biking activity with the watch on the handlebard.

At any rate, you will have to tap the screen to get it in "bright" status. The timeout setting controls how long it will stay bright before dimming out.

There are some third party watches that have an additional "bright detailed" state, which is the "active" state plus more data information

If you want the screen to turn brighter when you turn your wrist, you have to turn wrist gesture on (bright state)

If you want the screen to be completely off when not in the bright sate, you have to turn Always On Display OFF, and turn Wrist Gesture ON.

  • I think he meant "Display Off" instead of AOD, if I understand his second post correctly.

  • thanks for your support. the i see 2 scenaries here:

    1. always display on with wrist raising gesture on. The brightness difference between wrist raised and down, is pretty small. With the current battery level the duration is 4 days. Which is quite short. Even when the gesture is turned off, 4 days is the expectation.

    2. Always display off and i need to activate the screen by tapping, which is pretty annoying. Then the brightness difference is high, because the screen is black when not activated. This leads to a duration of 9 days.

So the gesture modus doesn't bring anything in terms of extending battery life.

What isnt right about my conclusion? Do I miss here something?

  • sorry, i have found wherei made a mistake. Now it is working. Always Display off in combination with activating by wrist raising works now. Now i can continue enjoying this awesome watch :). many thanks for helping!

  • The brightness difference between wrist raised and down, is pretty small.

So that you know, the brightness setting of the display only impacts the "bright" state. The "dim" state is not changed with the brightness setting. You will see a larger difference outdoors, where the watch will also take into ambient lighting to level the "bright" state enough to compensate for bright light, up to the "brightness" setting. In other words, for the same brightness setting, the display may be brighter outdoors in "bright" state than indoors.
