Nap Detection / Recording

I had thought by now Garmin would have figured out Naps and at least a way to manually record them.  According to some documentation if you put the watch in Sleep Mode manually it should record a nap if you actually sleep while in that mode.  I have tested twice now and nothing recorded.  Oura has this figured out and it works all the time, why is this still an issue with Garmin?

  • +1

The feature has been requested in the beta forums, in the idea mailbox, etc.

  • Yeah... Not shocked, but that doesn't fix the issue, that just kicks it down the road Shrug tone3

  • I give it a +1, would be nice to have this feature since I am sure the metrics would influence Body Battery / Stress / Training Readiness at minimum.

  • I have requested this as well. I did notice that if you have bed set at 11PM and go to bed at 9:30PM, watch detects that. I was pretty happy with this

  • At least long naps do affect body battery:

  • Sorry but I do not want naps included as part of sleep. Ideally a nap should be less than 40mins (over 40mins gives no real benefit) and this would severly impact your sleep scores and sleep stages based on how normal sleep cycles work. So I do think that Garmin has it correct in recording naps as a boost to Body Battery which is supposed to reflect your energy levels and naps are all about boosting your energy levels.

If you are napping longer than 40 mins (ideally should be 10-20mins) then you need to take a seroius look at your sleeping habits and possibly consider a sleep clinic to ensure there are no sleep issues. as you really shouldn't need naps longer than that/ in reality you really shouldn't need naps at all if you are sleeping properly.

I used to regularly nap +3hrs, fall asleep watching a movie etc, fortunately was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and got sent to a sleep clinic where sleep anpnea was diagnosed - now on a CPAP machine and don't need any naps at all. On the very few occassions I do have a nap its a comfort thing (i.e. weather miserable) and or had some really bad sleep i.e. maybe mask got loose so got no deep sleep that night.

So based on this Garmin/First Beat have sleep tracking correct - naps under BB and not under sleep, so that your deep sleep, rem, and light sleep all show correct percentages against overall sleep duration, which if naps were included would skew these percentages, and thus potentially skew your sleep score (though seems heavily based on HRV, duration, rest/awake and deep - which is just as well as garmin really struggles with REM/light which expected cause even EEG machines struggle with these two stages (need EEG and visual detection).

  • No automatic detection but you can track naps with my "Nap till rested" app apps.garmin.com/.../639b8e5f-dfa1-4ecd-b6c7-99e865622264

  • The Epix 2 already has native nap tracking.

  • Wow, I didn't knew that. Let's see if they will bring it to other watches

  • At the moment, nap detection is available on the following watches:
