v9.37: Fast Battery Drain

Hello everyone. I installed 9.37 this morning, charged the unit to 100% and then did a soft reset. So far the problems doesn't seem to be gone: from 9.30 to 13.00 the watch has already gone down to 97%. 3% in a little more than 3 hrs is, in my experience, worse than 9.36. But I tried yesterday to stop all Bluetooth communications and the watch used 4% in 24 hrs.

Will Garmin ever get a grasp on this issue? Because certainly cutting all comms isn't an acceptable solution, at least for me!

I'm beginning to lose hope....

  • Welp, I did the 9.37 install 2 days ago and my battery dropped from 87% 2 days ago to 80% right now. For me it's nice. Maybe you have something or some app that drains your battery?

  • Personnaly 9.36 (in its Beta form, I'm now on 10.33 Alpha) has fixed my draining issue but it seems to be not the case for everyone. Major draining still occurs for some users. Always linked to blue tooth for a very long time. (It was/still also the case on Fenix 6 series...)

Quoting a user on Facebook Epix Group:

"Still loosing 75% of my battery during 7hrs of sleep with 9.37. No Oxy on, just BT and HRM, screen Off. Of course no GPS or activity. Watch fully charged at 22:30. Now (06:00) down to 35%. Yes, have done it all with soft/hard/factory reset. Have of course opened a warranty case with Garmin, they are still sending FAQ on how to optimize battery. Do not know if I have a lemon or if it SW, but it is surely going back."

But in your case, remember from 100% to 95% the reading are not that accurate. (It was the same issue on Fenix 6 series, you could lose the 3% first from 100% to 97% in one hour before getting a stabilization of the battery use). Monitoring such small battery (when 100% full) seems not really easy. That's why some users let it "soak" at 100% plugged in the charger for some hours. I don't know if it is recommended but it seems to work for them.

(Also I don't often charge that high my Epix, max 85% unless I need full stamina for a long activity far from a charger... but I do my own calculation with e.g. the time used to go down from 85% to 75% for example.)

You should monitor it yourself on a longer time, the time it needs to lose 10% of battery. The battery discharging curves are not flat and you need more time to see if 9.37 has fixed your battery drain or not. I hope it has because it is tedious.
So you cannot take this 3% in real consideration. In my own experience the reading get better accuracy at 95% and under.

  • I’ m not having this problem of battery drain.

But how did you have this picture/graph.  It is very interisting.

    Thanks,

    LD

  • Its an app that periodically polls for battery data.

It would be interesting if the experiment was repeated after uninstalling the app (and any other apps the user has).

    Ouch !! ;-)
    Work in progress then...

  • That is my watch in the post above. The battery monitor had no effect on the issue and was installed to document. No other apps or watch faces. This is my watch post 9.37 install and reset to factory settings, nothing touched in the settings after reset. As can be seen fully charged (16D) at 11:20, down to 12D three hours later and 8D after 6hrs, so dropping 50% in 8hrs. No activities or such, just left the watch alone. Expect to send it back once Garmin have accepted the solution is not in the FAQ they sent me on optimizing battery time.

  • Please fully charge your watch and full drain your watch and double check your settings before reaching the conclusion of fast battery drain. Thank you. We appreciate it.

Troubleshooting Steps That Can Be Tried:

    - Restart your watch.

    - Hard Reset your watch by holding down your top left button until your watch shuts off.

    - Reset to Defaults in your System > Reset menu.
