Downgrade 9.33 -> 8.37

Ha All,

I am going on a 3 week expedition next week, and would like the 1000$ watch I bought. Only this new upgrade is terrible. The watch goes to his battery in 2 days.
With no reponse from Garmin other then Factory reset.. I want to know

How can I get my old watch back and downgrade to 8.37?

Kind regards

Robbin

  • Alpha versions are still available for download and they contain files and instructions for backdating to previous public release. But you will loose all your settings and data…

  • Do you use Strava segments. There is a bug report regarding that, that Garmin said they working on. Something regarding endless syncing. Unstar segments and decouple Strava and see if that could be something for you.

  • I'm on the verge to go back to 8,37 too if nothing is happening on the next upgrade from Garmin.
Tell us Robbin if you got any good results ?

  • No battery drain here with 9.33.

Good for you, thank you for reporting. Now if you read the forums, you will notice many got battery drain with 9.33.........

  • Just because a number of people report problems does not mean everybody is affected. Posts from people who do not have the problem are every bit as relevant. However, it’s all to common for people who dare to report they don’t have a problem to be belittled at best or roundly abused at worst.

First it has never been said that "everybody" is affected but "many" to an answer to someone else than yourself....

If you don't have this issue, please don't spam this thread because it concerns mainly the users who got an issue with battery drain and is proposing to explore "backdating" to remove an issue.
And this is great for those who are plagued by "The Drain".

If you want to report how happy you don't have any issue or how annoyed you are because you got half battery stamina in Gesture Mode there is the "Official Software Fast Battery Drain" thread :
    https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/epix-2/306338/v9-33-official-software-fast-battery-drain/1490638

Now please back to the subject of that thread:

But you will loose all your settings and data…

Backdating to a previous version like 8.37 or even a stable Beta like 9.22 (I kept it) is something that could be tested instead just to try a factory reset which is has not changed anything in my case. (But it seemed to have change the battery drain for other users, though...)
Really, losing all Settings/Cards/Personnalisation/Locations is enough a pain...

    Quoting Garmin:
"To backdate: install the "force.tmp" file to the Garmin folder, along with the gupdate.gsp file for the software you want to revert to.
Then unplug and install. Your watch will backdate to whatever version you loaded. Backdating software will revert your watch to factory default."

As Backdating means also a factory reset.
So, losing all settings by backdating to a previous stable version seems a nice solution if you need all the stamina announced when you bought your watch.

(Oh Gosh, I'm breaking open doors...)

Now would Garmin not advice us to do that ? Would it be risky for the Epix ?
That's the reason for this thread too.

  • I got an answer from Garmin Chris:

"You are fine. If your issue is so severe you instead choose to backdate for now until the new software update resolves the issue, it is an option. However, since we no longer post Beta software at the top of the forum for each device, it can be more difficult to find the older software. Please note, your watch will master reset during the process."

  • Hello Robbin.

Did You downgrde You watch to 8.37 allready? Battery life is back to capacity like before update to 9.33?

I am also considering going back to the previous version. I had a big headache choosing epix over fenix 7 but finally 16 days of work sound good.

After update its only 8-9 days what is sound not so good as promised 16 Disappointed

  • I am also considering going back to the previous version.

Me too but only if the next Beta is not fixing it. ;-)
